... from the front of my house today.
I literally feel devastated. I should have known.

That is a very low blow ... although a sign of the times.

Spare a thought for those relatives of a deceased who witness a brass
gravestone stolen for scrap metal. Always a worst case scenario which may, perhaps, helps to put your loss into some perspective?

I guess it won't be anyone nearby, i.e. pointless to keep a lookout in other front gardens? Could you prove/recognise their basket as being your own if seen? Maybe it might be sold at a local car boot sale...but how would you prove it was yours?

I could easily prove it was mine, I have photos of it from seedlings. Plus it had hessian sacking, hiding the distinctive plastic lining that I still have the other parts of. But I don't expect I will ever see it again.
I do, of course, realise there are many worse things in the world; this is what's known as a 'First World Problem.' But it isn't nice when it happens to something you have poured your time and effort into, and it makes me realise just how low people can be.

That is awful.... What is this country coming to? We travelled all through Europe in a motorhome with 3 mountain bikes chained to the back, we left them there when we went shopping, to the beach, sight seeing and had no worries. On the night we arrived back home it was very late and we didn't want to disturb the neighbour Making a noise removing them and have a guess what.... 4 weeks abroad all ok.... One night home and all 3 bikes including the bike frame taken off the motorhome and never found.. Baffling isn't it!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that @TurnedThespian. It's horrible having something stolen. Is there a way of padlocking or securing hanging baskets? Of course you shouldn't have to, but if you were to do an autumn basket to replace it, it would be nice to know it was safe :(

Some years ago I use to look after a hotel with hanging baskets and tubs all on the front way.1 year,1 month after we put up 5 baskets to the hotel front all 5 where stolen, the police where called but said there was very little they could do as there was no markings or name's on the baskets. So we did them again, but before they where filled we wove a chain through the basket, and fasten them to the wall at the back of the basket, then replanted the basket in situ on the wall,we did this for all the years that they where there and had no more problems until the hotel changed hands. Another gardener under cut me to get there work and said to the new owner that it was just a waste of time what I had done.Guess what happened 3 months after he had done the basket's.???:wow:
I was asked by the new owner how we did what we did, My answer was,( sorry but I can't print my reply here) I will leave it for you all to guess what the reply was !!!!!!!

Not so sure about that, RB, as that sort of thing has been happening for decades:dunno:
My sympathies, TT, it's a nasty, petty thing to do and I hope the perpetrator gets Trench Foot.:coffee:

If you don't remove the hanging baskets for watering, then I guess one solution might be to have a small short chain and small padlock around where the hook meets the holder. It could be covered up with something so as to not look unsightly. (Just for the basket/s outside your house).

@rosebay , I've never in my life seen a Brass headstone, never mind heard of one being stolen. Undoubtedly there are far worse scenarios in the world that happen daily but this doesn't mean @TurnedThespian does not have the right to be upset about the theft of their property. Crime is crime, regardless of how insignificantly you appear to view this one. I also don't think you offering "perspective" was at all helpful in this instance.

I am sorry you have not heard of brass being stolen from headstones. Here is a link.

Where exactly did I imply that TurnedThespian did not have a right to be upset? [IMG] I think you have badly misunderstood me. Of course I had empathy for her situation...I offered much more than perspective - specifically, various solutions in TWO of my posts above. You seem to have overlooked this. I would appreciate a more balanced reading of the contents of my posts before you jump the gun. Thank you.
