It is set to off by default for privacy/security reasons, but if you are using your PC as part of a home network of computers then it should be on (assuming you want to share files between PC's)

 

To be honest, in your situation it won't make any difference as there is nothing else on your network to discover or share.

 

To a degree, it is nonsense, yes. Avast and AVG are a couple of decent free antivirus packages, but personally I use ESET simply because I think the paid ones tend to be in front of the others in terms of new discoveries and protection, but also because I have used it for years on all my PC's and never had an issue.

Norton and McAfee are bloatware and slow your system down, whereas ESET has a small footprint on resources

Get shot of the McAfee - even if it's not in use its a drag on resources. ESET is about 35 quid for one PC and goes up about a fiver or so for each additional PC thereafter

Good evening @EnglishmanCFC I have been using Windows 10 for a few months now and use the built in Windows Defender and have found no problems with it

You don't need to install any Anti-Virus program, because you already have one which is Windows Defender. It protects you against Virus, Worm, Trojan, Spyware, Adware and other malicious programs

 

AVG and Avast have fairly good reports from Which? but they say that the inbuilt security in Windows 8 makes it unnecessary to have another form of security.

I guess that they have kept, and updated, the security for W10.

Windows Defender helps protect your PC against malware (malicious software) like viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Malware can infect your PC without your knowledge: it might install itself from an email message, when you connect to the Internet, or when you install certain apps using a USB flash drive, CD, DVD, or other removable media. Some malware can also be programmed to run at unexpected times, not only when it's installed.

Windows Defender is included with Windows and helps keep malware from infecting your PC in two ways:

Providing real-time protection. Windows Defender notifies you when malware tries to install itself or run on your PC. It also notifies you when apps try to change important settings.

Providing any time scanning options. Windows Defender automatically scans your PC for installed malware on a regular basis, but you can also start a scan whenever you want. Windows Defender automatically removes (or temporarily quarantines) anything that's detected during a scan.

In Windows 10 you can turn off Windows Defender real-time protection, but it will only be temporary. Windows will automatically turn real-time protection back on if it's off for a while.

Warning
When you install some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs, they may automatically turn off Windows Defender. In this case you may not be able to turn on Windows Defender again until the 3rd party AV program has been disabled (turned off) or completely uninstalled.
