This Windows 10 is driving me absolutely nuts. Everything is made difficult to find. On one occasion I stumbled across the old Internet Explored options page - the tabbed notebook that showed dozens of settings that you can adjust. So it exists - but I found it in a program which opened when I downloaded a PDF file. Like so much Windows stuff the program involved didn't say what it was, but it did have an options button that led to all these settings. There is no way I can find it again. Neither Microsoft Edge or Chrome have any button that leads to it - but I know that it exists. I can't find a PDF file that opens in the same program again. Not all PDF files open in the same program.

Currently I am trying to add a program to the startup folder. I know where it is but there is no way I can get to it from file explorer. I want to open Desktop/Users/AppData... etc. But Desktop doesn't show Users as one of the directories that it will open, even though I have set the options to show hidden folders and files. However if I press Windows key + R and type shell:startup I get to the start up folder and if I keep going back one level I get to a DeskTop folder, that I have never seen before, which shows Users. If I go up one level again I get to the Desktop itself, but I can't get back to Users from there. Typing shell:startup after Windows Key + R is just not instinctive or user friendly.

Typing Startup in the search facility shows a lot of unrelated rubbish. Selecting Startup from the programs list also shows unrelated rubbish.

      I HATE WINDOWS 10.

I have now finally managed to get Windows Mail into my startup folder, after a lot of mucking about altering permissions etc. Task Manager shows that its there and enabled. But it still doesn't work when I switch on. Windows XP was a doddle, but it never worked in Windows 8 either.

I REALLY REALLY HATE WINDOWS 10.

The trouble is Pete that you are going to have to change some time. Its either pain today or pain tomorrow.

However it saddens me that they don't seem to have learnt the lessons of Windows 8.

Yet another irritation is that I keep getting a pop up that says I haven't synchronised my mobile phone with my computer. I can close the pop up, but there is no way I can see of stopping it from keeping coming back.

My phone only has a 6 feet flex and isn't mobile enough to synchronise with my computer, which is upstairs.

I was quite happy with XP, I used it for years, only got 8 about 18 months ago, so why should I have to change now, already, still getting my head round this one.

I'm quite happy to just stand still as I cant see that 8 is any improvement on XP.

I only use it for fairly basic stuff, cant stand getting involved in all that rubbish.
I just want something that works, without all the problems and cock ups that these things seem to perpetuate.

Pete, if you are using W8 and happy, I suggest you continue with it. Any forced change is years away.

I find Windows 10 is fine for doing routine things. Once you have clicked on an icon and the program runs - it doesn't matter what the operating system is.

But I do dislike the way that they hide things these days. It makes setting new things up a pain, but is also more sinister. I have only just learnt that Microsoft has built a back door in Windows 10 that allows them to disable your computer at any time if they wish. They justify it by saying they can disable a computer if it has been stolen. But they also have the ability to do it if they don't like the software you are running, or if you owe them money or have any sort of disagreement with them. Of course, they would never use that facility improperly - would they? :mute:

I am going to have to stop thinking about Windows 10 - if I go on like this I could end up a grumpy old man. :rolleyespink:

Mr Kandy is in IT for his job and he refuses to install Windows 10 because he says that until all the bugs have been ironed out so to speak he won't have anything to do with it and this is from someone who has been in IT over 25 Years and knows a little bit of what he is talking about:biggrin:

                        I think they've stopped supporting my ZX81 :hate-shocked: .

I can do OK with my W7 as I don't need any of the facilities of W10. They say they'll support it until 2020 and it should continue to do what I want for a long time after that. :blue thumb:

Good morning @shiney its what Adam took from the tree :loll:my friend everyone has an app these days. TV shows, web sites, major multinational corporations, even your brother-in-law's taxi firm:heehee: conducts its business through an iPhone app -- but what are they?
Well, @shiney apps are basically little, self-contained programs, used to enhance existing functionality, hopefully in a simple, more user-friendly way. ;)

Take one of today's modern smartphones. They all come with powerful web browsers, meaning you can do pretty much anything you can do on a desktop computer in a phone's browser.
But fiddling about with a URL bar and managing bookmarks on a mobile phone it still a pretty awkward, cumbersome experience. Which is why many on line sites and services now go down the standalone app route, giving them better control of the user experience and, hopefully, making everything simpler and quicker to open and use.
This should be self explanatory to a scholar such as your good self my friend :roflol:
