The more I hear the more I am convinced that I will stick to what I know. I have a music computer with Windows 7 Professional, another computer with Windows XP, a laptop with Windows 7 Home, this computer with Windows 8.1, A Sony Experia tablet with something called android, and a smart phone (another Experia) which drives me batty every time I touch it. I am going back to a pencil and paper and writing letters :)
Woo .... I think you are far too trusting ......my last 10 years have taught me to be cynical of everything :wallbanging:

Good morning @whis4ey my good friend you are probably right but life's short,I find its complicated and hard work being not trusting, and anyway in my experience keeping one eye on your back gives you a crick in the neck:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Wow, Sam! You've got six computable thingies :hate-shocked:. That's five more than me. :thud: But I've got lots of paper, pens and pencils. :heehee: I also don't have a calculator (apart from the little grey cells ) or anything as modern as a slide rule :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Hi all .I like most put off installing W10 for a few days. I was certain everything would have to be set up again. I used the excellent Snipping Tool to take pictures of all my progs installed and even the setting for my Thunderbird email account.

        I read the article: http://www.howtogeek.com/197559/how-to-install-windows-10-on-your-pc/

Basically the most important part is when you get to the screen "Settings"--- "Express Settings"

You DO NOT choose that option but click the customize option. The reason being there are about 6 apps that will install as DEFAULT such as Browser, Music, Photos etc.

In the Customize screen just untick them all. They will still be on your computer but not as your main default prog (windows now seem to call all programmes APPS)!!! I like Chrome as my Browser and I have a file with all my pictures in so no need for Microsoft to choose the programme for me.

Microsoft do seem to want to know everything about you.W10 Anyway once installed go to SETTINGS by clicking the little White Microsoft logo on bottom left of screen then go into the tab PRIVACY. In the Privacy Tab you will see 13 separate tabs like, General, Location, camera etc.

I personally clicked OFF to all these except the one about send feedback of problems. I have done a Snip Tool of the first screen so you can have an idea of what it is about.

You will have no idea W10 is installed as the desktop screen looks exactly the same as W7. It is only when you click the Microsoft logo bottom left that you will see the difference. In the picture below I have not touched anything on the right panel "Play & Explore" but on the left panel “Life At a Glance” I have changed a bit to suit me. Any app that is moving around and annoying you just RIGHT click mouse while hovering over it and either click UNPIN FROM START or TURN LIVE TITLE OFF to disable it.

Most of my progs if I RIGHT click with say PIN TO START which I have done with a few, Microsoft Office, CCleaner,Thunderbird,Picture (my pictures) etc Quite easy to do and you will work out which progs you like to have on hand quickly.

I must admit the app at the bottom called PHOTO is one of Microsoft and is very useful. Once clicked it will take a while to load all your photos into it but you can sharpen, resize etc, quite handy but again I prefer to use Photoshop.

Overall I had no problems installing, all the progs were loaded except for one which was very small and W98 era!! But windows lets you know anyway. Internet & email was all set up and working properly.

I do like W10 as it is faster than W7 and yes there are a few things which are in different places than W7 was but once you found them it is no problem. By the way if you RIGHT click the Microsoft logo at bottom there are a lot of options you can go to.

Thanks Peter, that is what my friend needed to know.
Still not going to go for 10, Downloading it would take up all our allowance for the month so we would then not be able to go on the Internet for that time. And with current speed, it would take over 4 hours!

Good morning @whis4ey yes my friend back in the 1960's in my fair ground days, you've proper started yours truly off now :old:;)

The Ghost With The Hammer In His Hand (Jimmy Wilde) and Tommy Farr, the British and Empire heavyweight champion of the 1930s who later dismissed the fighting qualities of Muhammad Ali with the words, "He wouldn't have hit Joe Louis's arse with a handful of rice", had started out in them too.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

They had been the bloody and brutal workplaces of men as tough as tortoise sandwiches, whose eyebrows were so thick with scar tissue they drooped across the sockets like Austrian blinds, but to some older people the memory of them still has a carnation-tint of romance.

And why not? After all, it was in a fairground boxing ring back in the 1930s that a young pitman from the Northumberland coalfield did go three rounds and win a pound. He used the cash to buy a wedding ring for the girl he loved. His name was Robert, his bride-to-be was Cissie and two of their sons were called Bobby and Jack. If it hadn't been for the boxing booths we'd never have won the World Cup. Reason enough for the English to love them a little bit, I think.;)

I'm confused :rolleyespink: This thread was started in February, but I thought Windows 10 wasn't released until the 29th of July? Did you get some kind of pre-released version?

I've had this laptop since February of 2014 and it came with Windows 8.1. My previous laptop was Windows Vista, so boy was this a shock to my system!

I immediately hated it, and it took hours to work out how to get my desktop back, and how to do something as simple as turn it off, haha. I can only be grateful I still had the extra laptop so that I could Google all the "How do I do XYZ on Windows 8.1?" I did that a lot that night...and I mean a lot :yikes:

At that time I wasn't a smartphone user either, which I think might have helped a little bit. Apps and things meant nothing to me. I was using a laptop not a smartphone and resented the apps

Now I have a smartphone, I use a few select apps on my phone, but really only two or three on my laptop, and even then we're just about the likes of Skype.

I still have the Windows 10 icon on my taskbar, and still waiting on the notification to say it's ready to be installed. To be honest I'm in no hurry, so I'm not going to take any of the shortcuts I read that are available.

I think it's great that it's free, though. It's about time Microsoft gave something back
