Sorry Rad! :grphg: At least you know how long you can hold your breath under water.

Your garden's come on a real treat and the bulbs will put on a great display next spring. :dbgrtmb: Have you had any birds in your bath yet?

              Quite a while apparently

I can't wait for a huge explosion of colour! It'll be worth all the elbow grease!

Aww you'll make me blush  You can have a load of cuttings and seeds next year ;) I'm still collecting those seeds for you. They're slowly opening every day :blue thumb:

I've had a few tits splashing around but nothing special. I could make a similar joke about the cats but that might be pushing it too far :heehee::nonofinger::nonofinger:

[hoping I don't get in trouble for this comment :fingers crossed::noidea:]

The above is a leading reply to my question but I'll be serious for once. :) I don't think you'll see any larger birds at the bath as the rim is too narrow and the surface shiny, it won't be comfortable for their feet when hopping in and out, plus the fact you have said it gets hot. Also, the pebbles will move under their weight giving a feeling of instability. Sorry Rad, just trying to be constructive not destructive. :)

Hope did very well with the bird bath. The pebbles don't move and it doesn't get hot because the water absorbs the heat. It's warm water at the most. Also, they won't need to land on the rim. Perhaps the photo is deceptive but it's tilted. They can land straight on the pebbles.

Although the rim at the top is thin, like you said. And yeh the reflection would probably spook them a bit too. The pebbles under the surface make the floor uneven so they probably won't like walking around in it either. I plan to get the creeping jenny forming a "mat" around some of it to give them a platform. I'll keep my eye on it.

It's a nice feature even without the birds. The wind comes up the drive, hooks around the bowl and swirls the water gently.

I'm glad you have a laugh. GC is like therapy for me lately :snork: And thank you for the kind words... I'm pondering over the idea of doing some gardening work on a part time basis. Watch this space.

Sorry, I was talking about the rim of the bath getting hot not the water.

All birds will never land straight in the water, they will sit on the rim and test the heat of it first, which takes us back to the rim problem for the larger birds.

Sorry, we're thinking at cross purposes here too. I doubt whether the reflection would be a problem, I was thinking of their claws sliding on the shiny surface.

It is a lovely feature Rad and Hope has made a good job of it :dbgrtmb: but unfortunately birds go for practical not pretty and they need to be comfortable with something before they will make use of it. They prefer something that feels solid. :)

@Sheal good point(s). I've never noticed that birds land at the side and then wade in but now that I think about it it seems really obvious :redface:

Well if the birds don't use it then it's no problem. They have dust baths in my nicely forked soil so I still get the entertainment value.
