Hello and welcome to the forum.

Are after winter colour/flowers? Or something for the spring?

    Hi Wipnut,

    Welcome to Gardeners Corner

    :sign0016:

Are you after perennial plants or larger shrubs or small trees ?

Also, which part of the country are you as this will help with hardiness.

Hi WN, welcome to Gardeners Corner:thumbsup::snork: You'll find plenty of help and advise to get you started on container growing, but you will need to tell [a] what size pots you're going to be planting in, where you're putting the pots, i.e. in Sun, partial Sun and Shad, or full Shade. So a description of the area where your pots will be will help us to answer your question.:coffee::snork:

Thank you for your comments. Like i said in my very first post, I am new to gardening. I would like something all year round if possible. On an West facing or a South facing wall (not made my mind up where to put them yet) I live in Somerset.

Hey @wipnut ... Welcome to GC!

          Check out this website:

          http://www.finegardening.com/10-plants-year-round-containers

Personally, I would have "creeping jenny" planted around the rim, spilling over the edge. If it's got some moisture in the soil, it will grow, regardless of shade, wind, temperature, frost etc. It's a real trooper! It also has some little yellow flowers that appear.
In the middle I would grow something fairly tall (but not silly tall) which is either a palm or a connifer. Something without flowers to make a nice backdrop.
Then pick a couple of medium sized perennials which flower at different times and plant a few of each type around the rest of the pot.

          Have fun!

Hi and welcome to GC :)

I know you said you wanted something low maintenance, but anything in pots will need more care than what's planted in the soil, simply because they won't have access to the same moisture/nutrients, so I'd look for something fairly drought tolerant, such as English lavender.
