@fat controller , no its on a lot of different machine specs , as you said downloadable upgrade is now called a downgrade , we gotta keep up with the kids
I'll take your pointers on Intel processors and RAM , I realise even the most basic spec machine these days will have 10 times the power I need. All I do is run a few Excel sheets and edit a photo or two. I'll have a word with Santa in December and see what he brings me !

Hi All. My desktop is about 5 years oldish and secondhand. It has a Intel Pentium 4 CPU.It has a 500 Gb hard drive that is split into 2 x 250Gb but when installing windows 7, I or the computer did not get the Raid correct so only one 250Gb was being used. Funny but I did not know about this till about 1 year ago[IMG] so basically the other half, 250Gb is empty. Still despite the large amount of prog on computer the 250Gb is only half full!!.My memory was only 2Gb but just added another 2Gb before downloading W10.For what I use it for it is still ok.

On the other hand my reconditioned laptop is 750Gb with 8 Gb memory and has Intel i5 and boy does it shift along. On desktop it takes around 90mins to convert a film onto a dvd. Using the same prog on the laptop it only takes around 30 mins.
When my desktop gives up the ghost I will get the Intel i5 with at least 6-8Gb memory. At the moment not too worried about 1TB hard drive because the new computer will again give up the ghost before that is full. Do not know how the i3 performs and the i7 is expensive and overkill for what I want. If you want really fast (and expensive) get a computer with a SSD drive.

I am always at friendly loggerheads with my electrician friend. He always builds his own computers and buys the best you can buy, he just likes to keep up with the latest technology. The desktop I have now is his cast off, he will keep computer around 3 years then rebuild. The last one cost him over £2000 with the graphic card alone costing around £400!!

I always say that for what he uses the computer for which is mostly business related, quotes, and invoices etc, hardly any photo work but has 2 screens so he can watch footie or F1 while working.

He will not have it that a graphic card half or even a third of the price will be suffice for him.

Still his computer could be my next computer so I should not knock it[IMG]

If you're going to read this get a cup of tea/coffee and some sandwiches, [and some anti-depressant pills], to last you.

I've just bought a new Laptop for the sole purpose of controlling a CCD camera for astro imaging by downloading a load of software for that purpose. The Laptop came with Windows 8.1 which had to be installed as "normal" and, actually, all went fairly well, albeit very slowly, throughout the installation. So, if my tortured memory is correct, I started installing 8.1 at around 1pm and after a snails pace got it installed at around 3pm. The computer was "hanging" for interminable times during the installation during the stages so I wasn't very impressed but "Hey Ho" as they say:dunno:
My troubles really started when I took up the offer of the free upgrade to Windows 10 which came with the new computer. I started the upgrade at just after 3pm. I think it took at least an hour to get to the first initial installation, only to find that it had failed because, according to the error page, of a "cancelled update" and would I like to try again.:gaah: So another try at installing the first phase......over an hour later "failed due to cancelled update" and would I like to try again?:gaah::gaah: I tried again and just over an hour later "failed due to cancelled update", would I like to try again?:gaah::gaah::gaah: There was a little box down mid page that said "Help", which I had clicked on after the first failure only to have no response. But I tried again and clicked on Help and then started another "try again?". Another hour went by and..........:hapydancsmil::hapfeet::partytime: it installed. "Great!!" I thought when the "Lets get started" page appeared:yes:.......only to find a "just sorting a few things" page appear. 30 minutes later, another page urging me to install [excuse me??. I thought I had just installed??:dunno:]. So I clicked on Next and the computer hung again for 20 minutes before off we went again. When ever I clicked on to a function for the next stage it took 20 - 30 minutes to respond. I cannot really convey just how long each phase of the installation took but suffice to say the page telling me that the installation was complete came at 1050pm. So, tired but not beaten, I clicked again thinking the Windows 10 page would appear.......:lolpt:Stupid Boy!! So what appears yet another installation page with the circle showing the progress of the installation:gaah: So at 1150pm the installation is complete and, after another "sorting a few things out" and a "installing apps" Windows 10 was in!!!:hapfeet::hapydancsmil:
:partytime:. Okay, now since the main purpose of this Laptop is to download software from a specific site for controlling the astro imaging camera I used Explorer Edge as it was the only Browser there. Great, let's go. Oh, no!!, get to the page listing the sites only to get a window "Bummer, Explorer Edge is not supported!.............Bummer???.......that was not the word I had in mind:gaah: So i thought "If Explorer Edge isn't supported where ever I go...let's try downloading Google Chrome as my alternative Browser....guess what?? "Bummer, Explorer Edge is not supported" so not only is the computer hanging for 20 - 30 minutes before responding to each command the Browser is useless. Then, out of the blue, comes a page would I like to have Google as my prime Browser............Oh, Yes, Yes, yes, would I!!!!!! So I clicked on "Yes" and nothing for another 20 -30 minutes. Then I tried, as asked, to open a new account. Again, every command click took 20 - 30 minutes to respond. So I left it, switch off the Laptop for the night, and went to bed having nightmares about computers. This morning I started up the Laptop again to find the Google page still there when the screen came on. I then went through the questions asked on the page, still having to wait 20 -30 minutes for a response to a click on a function. But now, having got to the "I agree to conditions" page and clicked on "I agree", the computer has frozen and for the last two hours has not responded.:dunno::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah:

My laptop did a Windows update three days ago when I shut down.

Since them I can only run Chrome for about half an hour before I get a message saying its not responding.
I then get another box saying Windows is looking for an answer to this problem.
I know the answer, even 3 yr old would, its the bloody Windows update, nothing works properly after one of them.

Windows is downright dodgy as far as I'm concerned, none of it has ever been reliable or for that matter user friendly.

It appears to have done 22 updates on the 9 Sept.
And I aint got a clue which one is causing the problem.

An update from last night......after waiting the 2 hours this morning I switched off the Laptop again for another two hours. Then I switched it on again and the page of the hanging Chrome agreement appeared again, I tried clicking on "agree" yet again and nothing happened,:dunno: so I left it on again. Then after another 3 hours another page appeared asking me what Microsoft settings would I like. I then have tried to persuade W10 that I don't want Explore Edge as my default explorer but wanted Chrome instead ......to no avail so far. I have followed all the procedures but so far the Chrome label always disappears on completion:gaah::wallbanging::dunno: There was even a cheeky window that appeared asking me how much did I enjoy installing W10......it disappeared before I could give my honest answer. The laptop is operating "normally" now except for not making Chrome the default browser......but tomorrow is another day.
I've decided not to install W10 on my desktop at the moment as I have the feeling it will insist on removing Chrome as my default browser and replacing it with Explorer Edge. Also I don't want to "lock up" my main computer while W10 takes days to install itself with all the wrinkles it has brought so far.:coffee:
