My earlies, second and main crop are doing pretty well. New to this. I have planted some winter pits. Love the idea of eating our own pots at Christmas. Charlotte, Maris Peer and Gemson. The are growing really really quickly compared with those I planted in April. Is this correct? Concerned they will out grow the bins I am growing them in before too long.

Thanks - but the growth is crazy. Is it the exact same process. Foliage, flowers and flowers start the die I can harvest? Its a long time to Christmas, they better slow down. Want them for December!!!!!

Yep, they'll slow down as the weather gets cooler, had some plants wiped out by the blight a few years back and didn't bother digging them up at Christmas. Found I still had spuds when I dug the bed over in February :)

Yesterday I emptied the first of my 42 litre bags planted with Pink Fir Apples and the tubers were growing all the way up to just underneath the surface of the compost, not just in a clump where the seed spuds were planted like other potato varieties . A bit early to lift them, as I waited until they were reduced to £1/bag before buying/planting, but I'm preparing a 'back to uni' veggie box for our daughter (she refuses to take one of my marrows, how ungrateful).

            great looking harvest!

is your shed insulated? other wise the frost will get in the shed wont it? im a new grower just at the buying timber stage to build my raised beds and was thninking of places to store spuds, i ruled out my shed where i thought that would be no good with the frost and my shed not being insulated....

Not fully, it is about halfway done. I do a little more when some new insulation is sourced. All the polystyrene insulation has come from building site skips.

            Steve...:)

Some protection (ie a shed with no insulation) is better than no protection at all. You could also try wrapping the harvest in old blankets, just don't wrap in any plastic.

              Good luck!

              Steve...:)

I went to the Harrogate flower show yesterday.

There was a stall selling used coffee sacks for £1.50

Bought myself one. Thought i'd put my spuds in it, its massive!
