Christmas Cake

Hi all

Does anyone know the best place to get christmas cake ingredients for a cheap price. My local supermarket's are really expensive!

Do you have a "grape tree" next to you? It is the new chain of shops by the founder of Julian Graves. They are a lot cheaper for the dried fruit...

Hmmm, just looked, and they seem to be more Midlands and west based. One in Sheffield, but that seems about as northerly as they go.

 

Another idea - when I was wandering around Poundland, as you do (well, nothing like that over here!!) I was surprised how cheap some of the dried fruit was...

...also, seeing as you are in are in Greater Manchester, have you checked out some of the Indian shops? V cheap for whole almonds...

Why thankyou @shiney it's good to be back how are you and the boss? no luck with pound shops. Aldi for sultanas - 84p, mixed fruit - £1.49 and glace cherries £1.09, tesco for mixed peel - 74p.
Total cost about a £5 probably less.

We are big date and Brazil fans here, so found poundland/poundworld good sources for that.... But I am obviously a little out of touch...

and subjectively wondering: What is a Christmas Cake???? Is that like a Fruit Cake???

 

Yes, @redstar, it's a rich fruit cake, cooked long and slow, often with alcohol in the mix, and also added after cooking (called "feeding"!). Traditionally, it is made 1-3 months before the event (also is often used as a wedding cake)

 

yep, we call it Fruit Cake over here. Women over here, really don't make it, sometime its sold as a funding for a charity. It's kinda a joke, like no one wants it joke. I do have a recipe for it dating back to 1860, made it once when I was young, had it wrapped in the cheese cloth with the southern comfort added over and over again. Thank goodness for a unheated back porch, so I locked it into a tin for its "seasoning" part.

Usually I make for gifts a Apple, Cranberry, Walnut loaf, its pretty, freezes well, has nice cardomen spice in it. Doing very little baking at Christmas time, as cookies are everywhere with the Amish. And considering the cost of my time and the ingredients, its easier to buy a few than use up my time.

 

Ah, but it's not just a fruit cake @redstar, it is dressed for the occasion.
