inherited a garden

I inherited my late aunt's garden,busy now trying to make it mine.she was a stickler for a tidy bed with pretty pansies and violas which left lots of space for weeds to put shop.in my world weeding should be totally unnecessary so I prefer perennials and shrubs that I can mulch nicely while they crowd out the weeds they also need less frequent watering,low maintenance is goal.thing is learning what grows best where is taking some time and some of the beds are looking untidy as im constantly having to remove unhappy plants.the house is east facing so the front gets less than half a day of sun and the backyard has a huge apricot tree that obscures the sun the other half the day.

 

Where are you? I would be really pleased to have a mature apricot tree?

 

Im in South Africa.i do love the tree for the shade and the fallen leaves in autumn are enough to mulch the whole garden.the little fruit it does bear are mainly enjoyed by the birds.

Advice for the garden - go indigenous!

 

I try to,added a whole lot of arums,agapanthus,daisy bushes,working on the clivias.

can see you picked the lingo lol.ja that is one of my fave aloes,i have a thing for cycads though,so how to go about marrying the indigenous/my roses and flowering crab apple etc garden

 

Not sure if Cycads and Roses is a good combination

But go to Keith Kirstens. Last time I was in SA I went there. He has a fair amount of indigenous stuff.

Last time I was at KK (Dec 2013) they had a fair amount of indigenous plants

There is also a specialist indigenous nursery located somewhere in the Magaliesburg
Can't quite remember the details. Have look online.
