    Hi everyone,

This is something completely different. We were up in our loft the other day and Mrs Shiney noticed two piles of something on the floor. They are both about 2"-3" long and one is about 1.5" high and the other about 2.5" high.

At the time we couldn't spot any other piles and haven't been back up there since - and we haven't yet done anything with them.

There is no sign of mouse or rat droppings and no obvious holes anywhere.

On close inspection of the photos they appear to contain seeds

Above both piles is the junction of some beams, where you can see that cobwebs and seeds collect. We have silver birch that tend to seed everywhere.

At another junction, above the bigger pile is this.

    P1240422.JPG

Do you think it's just seeds collecting in the cobwebs and then the cobwebs dropping under the weight?

The puzzle about this is that we've been here 42 years and it has never happened before.

    Comments please?

Thanks Scrungee, I'll be on the lookout for them :heehee:

I particularly liked this quote in the paper

"The escapees are thought to be single pets – reducing the chances they can breed." I'd have never thought of that!

They must think a solitary male or female still has a 50% chance.

Bats? I would say that the piles in the joints are as you say Birch seeds that have blown in and landed on the cobwebs but the piles underneath look like they are from an insect eating animal that is why I said bats, although it is a mystery if you can't see them hanging from the beams unless going up there disturbed them and they legged it until after you had left the loft.

Having said that there would surely be piles of bat poo everywhere and I am not sure if bats give off an odour when living in your loft.

I would contact the local pest control people and see if they can recognise what the problem is:smile:

PS,I see you have a little bit of bird poo on the joist in the top photo to the right of the pile of insects and whatever has done this it could be some sort of pellet that has been brought back up although I could be wrong:biggrin:

Bats - don't think so :noidea: - we go up in the loft fairly frequently (couple of times a month) and have never seen bats. The two piles would need to have been building up over a period of time if they were bat poo. The larger pile is only a few inches from where the light switch is (switch is on the side of the joist) and we almost certainly would have seen it if it was building up.

The areas shown of the beams are directly above the piles so it would appear that there couldn't have been bats there - or the cobwebs wouldn't have got so thick.

Bird poo - it could be, but it could also be a seed that has rotted over the years.

I don't want to call out pest control if it's just seeds and cobwebs. I suppose I shall have to go up there and clear it up and look at it in the daylight

Hi @shiney could it be a squirrel? Their droppings I believe are a mixture of colours both dark & light. They can deposit their droppings in several places but they tend to leave them in one place!
The droppings look like they have nuts/bird seed in them from the photos, although my phone screen is cracked so I can't get a really clear picture. I'm wondering if you have a cheeky squirrel steeling your bird feed & somehow sneaking into your attick for a sleep!

Just one more thought...if it's bats poop I seem to remember someone telling me it would contain insects & it would really smell! :eeew:

            Interesting!
Zooming in for a closer look....a great deal in the heaps seems to be perfect seeds from Silver birch... without any sign of having been processed through a bird or animals digestive system!

No idea which creature might make a winter store from these.
Not sure mice would do this.
Maybe a remote camera trap to video the culprit would prove interesting.

Or could the answer be simple ..the seeds were blown in under the roof tiles and caught in spider webs above, which have got detached and fallen down in a small pile in recent gales?

P.S. Quite wrong for bat droppings...which look like grains of brown rice.
Which in the UK just contain insect wing cases etc and are dry...crumbling away to dust.
Even if you had bats in the attic they can squeeze into really tiny nooks and crannies and you might never see them... except at dusk as they leave the roof.

I suspect they are just cobweb balls.

                Thanks everyone,

Next time we go in the loft I'll clear it and check what it is.

                There's no smell to it.

Thanks @Silver surfer for the comprehensive analysis. :blue thumb:

That's what I told Mrs Shiney I thought it was. :)

I'd just like to say that I'm totally wrong! :doh:Squirrel poop is like pellets....so sorry
Hubby thinks it's probably a build up of cobwebs & seeds :blue thumb:
