It's quite amazing really just how much you pick up, especially the bits and bobs that you didn't set out to know/understand/learn.

Very recently, I attended our village Garden Society (yes, it has taken me this long to put my wellie over the threshold). I was keen and eager to learn any nuggets of wisdom they had to offer and attended full of enthusiasm :)

Of course, typical me, I attended on AGM evening ( ) but, after that, the "fun" began: a quiz! :th scifD36:

We were all handed a sheet of paper with lots and lots of garden related questions to answer :what: :th scifD36: :gaah: :dunno:    :ideaIPB:  :old:

I didn't "win" the quiz (don't be silly! :nonofinger: ) but ... I was quite surprised at just how many questions I *was* able to answer. Made all the more astounding by the fact the 3 women to the left of me (long standing members) were all in the habit of "conferring" and were pretty impressed with my knowledge :roflol:

Well, I doubt I would have known any of it without my time here on GC; so, I very big thank you to GC and the members who have instilled tidbits into my head without me knowing: sublime! ;)

Oh and a special mention to John (@JWK ) because one question was something to do with a female gardener in the Surrey area and I put down Gertrude Jekyll ... correctly!!!!:yahoo: :hapfeet:

Now, although I didn't win the quiz ...

... I did win the raffle: 3 polyanthus!!!! :roflol:
:hapydancsmil: Whoop-whoop!! (Go me; go me :heehee: )

Never done polyanthus before ... hope I don't kill 'em

Anyway: credit where it is due ... many thanks to GC for existing, the members for passing on their Knowledge Nuggets plus JWK for his adoration of GJ :ccheers:

Well done "M" and good to see you back :)

Another nugget for pub quizzes and kind of topical, since Jekyll and Hyde is causing a furore on the telly this week, is that Robert Louis Stevenson was a friend of Gertrude Jekyll's brother and borrowed the family name for his most famous character. Us posh gardeners here in Surrey know that it is pronounced "Jee-kill" and not the american version "Jek-ill" :pathd:

        Aww, thank you
It was only the pronunciation which let me down  (being a Maid of Kent I couldn't help it) but, I consoled myself that my spelling was correct *insert halo* :snork:

And, as a post script to the tale ... I was head-hunted by another member, later that same evening, to join their table for the village Wine & Wisdom night next month ... best be off to brush up on my general knowledge a.k.a. read my Pears Encyclopaedia before then :help:

Just as an irrelevant coincidence, I met a great pal for lunch today in a Pub/Inn called The Hawes Inn which is situated beneath the original Forth Bridge. It's said Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a fair chunk of Kidnapped while stay at the inn and it gets a mention in the book. Well done M, top of the class!

Aww, thank you all for the lovely WB's; you really are treasures! :wub2:

@Sheal - the garden is a slow but sure process so not a lot happened during my absence. However, before my "sabbatical" (<--- :heehee: ) I think I remember mentioning to a newish member that I had put up a couple of window boxes at the front of the house, plus planted up the big heavy trough in the front square?
The actual front garden square has been planted with some evergreen shrubs from Shineyland Garden weekend plus some bulbs another GC member generously shared with me. During my absence not only did the shrubs and bulbs settle down nicely but the window boxes and trough positively burst into life and colour *phew*!
At the recent meeting, I met a really elderly lady (real pleasure to listen to, former WWII Wren!) and she asked if I was local. She truly made my year when she said she had passed our house with her daughter and remarked, "Look how beautiful and colourful that garden is!" :wow:I felt so chuffed. So, really, another GC "success story" :dbgrtmb:
