Extending Lawn

Evening All,

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

The situation I have is... I have recently moved into a new property and the lawn currently has wavey edges and i would like to create a straight edge lawn.

I have lined out where i want the edge of the lawn, and created a edge with wood, and started to back will with soil..

Would it be best to seed now? or wait for the soil to settle? and how long would i have to keep there wood there before removing it?

It depends how even you want it. Freshly dug soil will settle a lot. What seems even now will be all lumpy and bumpy by next spring. You can speed things along by using either one of those pneumatic whacker things, or a plank of wood to jump on. Then add more soil where appropriate after you've compacted it.

To be honest though, were in November now. If you're very lucky will get unseasonably warm weather for the next few weeks to get grass seed to germinate, but I wouldn't count on it and even if it did germinate, it would have to survive winter before it's got established.

I personally think you'd be better off packing it down a bit manually, but otherwise doing nothing until spring. Give the ground a final prep in maybe mid March ready for seeding in early April.

Id just cut the new straight line at the lowest point of the curve giving a straight line and a slightly wider border that you can fill with plants,flowers,veggies or palms ?

 

Grass seed is unlikely to germinate under 12C so I agree with Clueless, leave it until next spring.
