Dahlias

I had one large one that did well in a big pot (Blackberry Ripple). Other bigguns less so. They just can't be supported well enough. The small and medium ones were fine.

I bought from national collection and halls of heddon and they are great.

Last year I grew all our dahlias from rooted cuttings so they just grew on one stem. I'm guessing tubers grow lots of stems? Do you just leave them all to grow and then pinch or are you supposed to restrict the number of stems?

I know, there's ages until I get to this stage, even if the tubers survive the next two months :D

Thanks for the tip, I will try chicken manure pellets this year. I'm really interested in more organic ways of gardening. Normal manure is great but it's so bulky.

 

Well the 2016 Dahlia season will be starting soon . I always plant my tubers in pots in the greenhouse at the back end of March . I save my Bishops Children Dahlia tubers every year but buy my "big" tubers new. I have used Wilkos tubers for the past few years , great price and quality This year for a change I have ordered a 10 x Dahlia Cactus collection from J parkers , as below , just hope they arrive on time and in good condition.
I am going to plant the full flower bed by the Ash tree with Dahlias for 2016 . 10 Cactus with the Bishops at the front . My first gardening lesson was big uns at the back little uns at the front Should be a lovely display late summer through to November

 

How exciting! That will be some display.

I have some tubers from last year I'm hoping last one more month. Plus I've ordered 14 new rooted cuttings. Absolutely no idea where to put them all!

Can't wait for spring now.

Hi Harry
You should be ok with those , I've used Parkers for years and never had a failure off them whether it be plants or bulbs etc.
It is the one company I would recommend to anyone.
