Cain killed Able, way before guns were invented.

We all have evil in us, it is what degree we can contain it. that we feed the positive not the negative. Our learned behavior. It is a fact that just given wife abuse, it can be seen in the family before, and before and before. It is there in all of us.

Just checked a future calendar online, and the aliens are probably invading in 2020, so the figures could rise.

I may be delusional, but that's a sad view to have of the world.

Most of the people that I know are good, help others where they needn't and go out of their way to avoid harm to others. I prefer to believe that is inherent in them. :blue thumb: :)

I've always found percentage tables and comparisons to be vague and the context in which they can be used as illustrations misused or misrepresented and also used to "dumb down" facts as can averages used in illustrations. An example of that is, say, the Council pamphlet that arrives annually to show rate payers where their money has been spent which is illustrated in slices of pie......which is totally useless for giving you any idea what amount of money when where. Figures, if true and factual, are much "sharper" in definition and can be compared/digested much more easily.:dunno::coffee:

Yes, but what I am saying is that you need something to compare figures to. It would be wrong in my opinion to say there are 'X' amount of murders in 'America' for example, but only half of that in the 'UK' , if America is twice as big as the UK (population wise). In this case you could say its the same in relation to population.
Without the population figures, it could definitely be misrepresented.
If the murder and population figures are correct, then surely the percentages would be?? :dunno:
Or have I gone mad?

actually , the UK including Ireland and Scotland is about the size as California, lot of people live in that area. Your right @NorthantsGeezer has to do with size relative.

But, given my life experience with human services , mental health, I still will maintain that evil does reside in us all (yes even me) . we have different levels, its how we deal with it, contain it, feed it. I have interacted with folks that I come away from with a very scary feeling from. And it is then I pray for protection. Is that true protection from a higher source or pulling from my being to avoid to not let an influence in, your call.

It depends if you actually need to compare figures from one country to another:dunno:
The factual figures of gun deaths in the USA are of such a horrendously high volume that you can't compare them to another country, especially if the comparison country is one that doesn't allow guns to be carried by it's citizens. You can lose the point and sense of a discussion by comparing like for unlike.
What has been pointed out in this thread is that the outside world has an impression that the USA has an out of control gun owning and use and yet as Lori has pointed out

"It's a 10 minute video showing that he U.S. didn't make the top 25 list of killing countries. Most were either South American, Carribbean or African nations. Informative but a full 10 minutes - would have preferred a quick list..."

I presume that because the USA is the more prominent country, which apologies to the others, then it's relentless mass shootings attract more attention.

I understand your point @ARMANDII, but I don't see how just quoting death figures keeps to the point, and the sense of discussion, when like you say, there are other factors to consider.
How can just those figures be relevant then? Which was my initial point
I was just creating an example @redstar , nothing exact :)

@redstar you are comparing apples and oranges. If you want to include square miles as a parameter for data then we here in Canada have close to zero percent murders per square compared to you. And we have a lot fewer churches per capita.

You mentioned your state of California, which by the way, creates more pollution than my entire country, including our oil sands. and then there are how many more states ?

You are draining the great lakes via Lake Michigan to water the lawns in southern states, and it goes on.

One can spin stats any way they want, but dead people are just that.

They were somebody's mother, father, son, daughter.... and as a Christian you should not be defending the ability of every two digit i.q. person to exercise their right to bear arms and then kill people with them.

not sure where your yarn is coming from @CanadianLori just responding to @NorthantsGeezer example, nothing more nothing less. And as a Christian, my "should" do's are my business.

                    Who does?

Not me! :nonofinger: :) That's only a slight exaggeration. :blue thumb: I doze between one and two hours a night, in an armchair, and haven't been to bed in over two years. As a child my parents said I was a bloody nuisance (told me that when I was an adult :heehee:) and was ordered not to leave my bedroom until 6 a.m. in the morning.

We lived in a tall terraced house and my bedroom was on its own right at the top. There were two other lots of tenants between our other rooms, at the bottom, and me. I was quite happy to be up there on my own, joined very often by Mickey the cat that owned one of the other families in the house. Mickey was a very unusual cat - I didn't know it at the time!

                    I don't, knowingly, dream :noidea:

                    No problem for me! :dbgrtmb:
