    It's all happened quite quickly - I have an allotment! 125 sq metres (6m x 21m).

It is a little bit of a mess at the moment with a lot of piles of old equipment. Clearly has been used quite heavily in the past. Not really sure where to start with it all... weeding in all likelihood! There is a rough structure to it already with a lot of raspberry plants and a grape vine on the East end.

Weed the patches that have less weeds first and manure or just cover over, that might make it feel less stressful and a bit more organised for you coming toward spring :) ,its a good patch :blue thumb: loving the the grapevine you have inherited well :)
Ask neighbours/plot holders what they know to have been grown on the plot and where so you can decide what to plant where next growing season

Haha, I went through it all yesterday and part of me was thinking "I want to just burn all of this and start again" and the other part of me was thinking "but whoever used this knew what they were doing so perhaps I'll need it".

Think it might all end up on a bonfire however...

Plastic barrel sections - forcing Rhubarb
Wire mesh bread tray - keeping pigeons off brassica seedlings
Wooden Trellis - dismantle the worst stuff and cut into row marker pegs, any sections that are OK can be laid on the ground, planted through and then raised as they grow to support them.
Beer crate? - transporting plants in pots to the plot
Expanded polystyrene sheet - putting under marrows and pumpkins

Just ordered three M27 root stock apples to have a go at creating some step overs. Saturday's job is to start the weeding in preparation!

                        Hi Jack,

Hope you do not mind but I grabbed your photo from your last post, but I did it to illustrate an idea so hope you will not mind.

Have you considered making your beds lengthwise instead of across? Like this.

Proposed new beds overlaid in blue.

The benefit of this is you actually get another of the little beds space due to the reduced use of pathway. It makes covering the beds in winter easier. It also makes it easier if you ever intend to rotovate it (It's not easy to rotovate small areas). Also it makes access up and down the plot a bit easier too.

                        Steve...:)

                            Hi Steve,

I don't mind at all! Thank you for doing that!

Just to check, do you mean have to long beds, rather than breaking them up?

I hadn't thought of that but I can see the advantage of it for space and looking after as you say.

I was taking the advice of crop rotation too literally perhaps, as that's tied to area of soil rather than physical beds I guess.

Very interesting idea. I'm definitely happy to have ideas because I'm new to this and would like to get it as right as possible first time around to be able to concentrate on growing :)

                            Jack
