Fuelled by Christmas spirit :ccheers: a conclusion.

        Bear with me on this....:)

If all vegetable matter creates three times the emissions of non-vegetable things, then that must also apply to the ethanol that they are putting in petrol nowadays. As an example, lets say pure petrol gives of an emission of 100 units.

E10 petrol has 10% ethanol in it. Ethanol is made from vegetable matter. Therefore, E10 causes (3 x10) + 90 = 120 units. The other one on the market (E85) is even worse. Thats (85 x3) +15 = 270 units...:frown:

So, to improve the environment, lets keep alcohol where it belongs in beer, wine and spirits! :yay::yay::yay:

Years ago things would have been done by MF 135 (about 60hp) tractor and a quite a few humans, now it's done with a big John Deer (200hp +) and one man/woman, soon it will be done with big John Deer and no humans  what used to be done by hand is now done by engines thats why there is more emissons, farms used to be 100 acres ringed fence (all fields around the farm) now they are 300 acre+ and spread over a large area, so more travling around, some farms have fields 30 miles aways from the farm building:yikes:

As well as the "so called scientists" the newspaper headline writers have to shoulder some of the responsibility.
It is also the "silly season for scientific publications" for example one study published this week shows that senior staff are more likely to have moustaches than to be women.

Have mostly lost all respect for so called scientists. The majority work for corporations and will manipulate any study to benefit their paymasters.
No scientist has come out with a cure for any medical ailments in the last 50 years only pills that manage a disease at a monetary cost.
Finally and mosty depressing is the fact that not one scientist is studying the resulting spread of high levels of radiation that has been allowed to kill off the north pacific which will in a short time kill all the worlds oceans and seas and tens of millions of peoples worldwide.
Where are all the scientists hiding ?

I'm surprised that sprouts are not in the firing line - after all, they are definitely responsible for increased toxic gas emissions, especially at this time of year......

Talking about sprouts, mine are still puny... are they edible being only about 1 inch in radius?

Apart from being a stupid conclusion from data the "scientists'" statement is nonsense from a grammar point of view.

I'm sorry if I'm getting up tight about little things but I do get annoyed when they mix up what they are trying to say. Skip the rest of this if you wish as I'm just playing with words.

They're supposed to be educated people that have to produce lucid and cogent reasons for their conclusions. This is typical of the discussions we have had on other threads about who needs to make sure their English is correct. On a friendly forum the grammar and spelling are, to a certain extent, irrelevant. For a scientific treatise it's essential that it's correct and precise.

                  A quote from their conclusions:-

Lettuce is “over three times worse in greenhouse gas emissions than eating bacon”,

This makes no sense as they're comparing a noun - lettuce - to a verb - eating. They're actually saying that a lettuce has gas emissions  and comparing that by saying that eating bacon produces gas .

Lettuce doesn't actually produce much, if anything, in gas emissions, but the process gone through in growing lettuce does. Similarly, eating bacon doesn't produce much in the way of gas emissions (I wouldn't like to use that argument if I was eating beans!), but the process of raising pigs and processing them into bacon does.

I'd like to see what criteria they used for calculating the emissions as I find it difficult to believe their conclusions. I also wonder if pig farmers have been helping towards supporting the study group.

Is that the 'scientific' way of saying "more worse"?

Did those scientists calculate how much morphine is in a pig for comparison?

I'll finish with this quotation from 'Tyler's Honest Herbal' (published 1982, but seems relevant today)

Or worsed, that would've really emphasised the worsedness of lettuce (and those 'scientists').

At least they didn't say lettuce's.
