I planted three hosta plants last year and all have now gone to a brown slime and disappeared, is this natural and will they be back next year after the winter?

That's completely normal. The leaves always go brown and slimy after a frost or failing that come about end October the plants shut down for the winter. If you carefully clear away the dead top growth you should be able to see the new "buds" they look a bit like pointy cones and are quite hard not squishy. If you have planted them deeply then the buds will be hidden by soil. Don't worry unless I'm very much mistaken they'll be back up again next Spring.

check out my hosta pic at redstar gardens on this forum. Have hundreds of them. Just rake out the spent leaves as I do general garden clean up in the fall-winter. And pop they are back again in full swing in the early spring.
