I don't get the high vis jackets for every seat Jack. Passengers come in different shapes and sizes?

I think I heard a similar story on Radio 4, where someone got a fine, but no reminder.
If I recall, the answer was that a reminder is a courtesy thing, not something that they have to do. I think it was a case of....the responsibility is yours!
My memory is bad though , so I can't guarantee the above is true.

Here we get our metal licence plate and every year we get a sticker to affix to it to prove we made our annual contribution to the civil servant salaries.

My stickers are rather thickly piled. Don't know where they get the glue but those suckers stick like wind in tight pants.

We must carry separate insurance in order to get our renewal. Our cars are subjected to emission checks biannually to get a new sticker. No pass, pay the mechanics to fix. Similar.

When selling or transferring a vehicle ownership then the full safety check happens. Then the mechanics do their happy dance....

And if acquiring new [1] vehicles also check your insurance has been correctly transferred at http://ownvehicle.askmid.com/

When I bought my last car I contacted my insurers and gave them all the details so it would be covered before I collected it. When I got the call that it had been delivered and was ready for collection I checked if it was showing as insured, and it was not, so I contacted my insurers and found they had entered the wrong registration details on their system. They checked the recording of when I gave them the information and agreed it was their error.

[1] It would be more difficult to do this with second hand vehicles as the insurers would be selecting/checking it against DVLA's database, but when insuring a brand new vehicle there's a delay between the dealership providing the registration number and it becoming available on DVLA's database. And the insurers also entered the wrong model, incompetent idiots.

I've just extracted this quote from the government website.

"To drive or keep a vehicle on the road you will still need to get vehicle tax and DVLA will still send you a V11 or V85/1 renewal reminder when your vehicle tax is due to expire. This applies to all types of vehicles including those that are exempt from payment of vehicle tax or have a nil rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)."

Tax, MOT and insurance details are all linked together on the internet. You can't get your tax renewed unless the net shows that you are insured and have a valid MOT certificate.

@shiney, I never received a renewal notice, so based on that and what you found on the government website, in theory I'd have a strong case to dispute the penalty.

However in practice, it comes down to my word against theirs. Its not difficult to imagine how that would go, so I've just paid it.

You're correct. Just because they say they send out reminders (and they probably do) doesn't make them liable if you don't get them! Liability is with you to renew it. :noidea:

Not all, there are some tractors which can be driven on the road with out Tax under limit use, which is, a agri vehical can be driven without tax if it's being use to get to fields 1.5 Km away from farm, but you must own the land in which you are going too, then you can go to another field 1.5 Km away again and so on

When I work with some of my disabled people their mobility scooters, although exempt from paying tax, have to complete the licence form each year!

I think that some mobility scooters have to be regerter with DVLA and some you don't, think it's the 8mph ones got to be regerter with DVLA and the 4mph not, but i'm not sure and could be wrong

If I remember right, it's something like if a motorised vehicle has less than 1.5 horsepower, is designed for a single user with no additional passengers, and is limited to 'walking page's (deemed to be something like 4.5 mph for the legislation), then it is exempt from tax and registration etc.

At least it used to be something like that, but since segways and those newfangled lazy git boards (i think they're misleadingly sold as hover boards) are illegal, I'm not sure anymore.
