What are you planting next....

...& when?

I'm a bit behind with sorting the plot for next year (i wanted it all dug, composted & covered by now)

I have onions & garlic to go in - they were delivered last week but they're still sitting there

Just interested to know what you guys are all thinking of planting next

From the top left corner: beetroot, kohlrabi, spring onion and daikon radish.

The tiny beetroot and kohlrabi seedlings were planted on 26th September, three days after clearing out the tomato bushes that had been growing there.

The winter hardy White Lisbon spring onion seedlings were planted on 10th October. I grew them from seed in plastic drinking cups about two months prior to transplanting.

The daikon radish were grown direct from seed sown on 12th October. They germinated surprisingly quickly (about 8-10 days) but slowed down in growth due to the cooler temperatures.

Of course, this is all very small scale but I use it to demonstrate that you don't have to leave your plot empty during autumn and the depths of winter.

How about you, OP, how far have you progressed?

I've been feeling behind myself

I managed to get the garlic planted this weekend. Start them off in pots and position them next to the house wall. Gives them a good start.

I transplant them down to my allotment in the spring

Ideally i would have liked to have got these planted at the back end of October/November

However, its 15C degrees outside. They'll be up in no time

I usually start the chillies and peppers off end of Jan/start of Feb but i'm going to Mexico in Feb. Going to start the seeds off a couple of days before i go and take them to the parents to keep an eye on. They should be ok in their seed tray

 

Take the Chillies to Mexico with you @Craig1987 , they will be at home then
I start my Chillies in late January as well. I am sure Feb will be just as good.

Crikey, I'd forgotten about this post as it was October lol!

I haven't planted anything at all recently. I have just bought a small heated propagator to start some kelsea seed off inThats todays plan!

I also still have the garlic & onion sets still to plant that I mentioned in the first post Will they still be ok to plant now?

 

This autumn has been unusually mild and if winter continues the same way... I say, yes, go ahead and plant the garlic cloves and onion sets.

It has also been very wet so I would improve soil drainage if planting directly into the ground, otherwise, they might rot before they take root.


Here is my little square meter of garlic planted in late October.



Garlic grows nice and bulbous in the second year. These won't reach that level of maturity as I plan to pull them up come mid-May next year to make room for something else.

I plan to eat them in their leafy state as they're delicious cooked or raw.


Growing decent sized onions from seed takes a long, long time, but there is a lot of fun to be had along the way. Good luck, OP.

I decided to pot everything, as the ground was so wet. Will just have to see how it gets on & if it fails - will try again next year
This is the first time for onions & garlic for me - from sets & seed....should be fun & also a learning curve no doubt

 

I have my soil blocks ready to start my hot pepper seeds. Guess I should get at that today...

that noise you hear is procrastination dragging my heels....this is what I need in the behind..

 

Sowed my Kesae onions yesterday 30th Dec, heated propagator in conservatory. Will be using old aquarium lights once they are through
