Thank you for 'this page' I have to laugh as if I had to call the bat carer out at this rate I would have to offer him bed and breakfast :heehee:

Very good read though... I think we are getting them in due to the very wet weather if I'm being honest all that I have helped back into the wilderness seem very healthy. I think their port of entry is the bathroom window which Mr AB opens after his shower in the morning..... 5am usually. I've told him to keep it shut so for the last week and half I've not seen any.... unless they are hiding under the bed :yikes::yikes:

Make sure you wear gloves when you handle them Apple Blossom, their bite is lethal and they could trigger an infection in you. Bats seen in daylight or unusual circumstances could be unwell.

New traps arrived today. I got 2 each of two different models. One set branded Big Cheese or something, the other set branded Rentokil. Caught Mickey 5 within minutes of setting the new traps.

Does anyone know how many there typically are in one mouse family? I currently have no idea whether I'm winning or losing.

I made a good start at tidying the outhouse yesterday. I discovered that the mice have burgled every single one of my packs of seeds, they've bust the lads inflatable dinghy, and nibbled a hole right through my old leather. The Leather was already dead, as mentioned on my other thread, butI didn't want the mice to defile it all the same.

There can be up to 30 or mice, Clueless. The gestation period for mice is 19 to 21 days and they can give a litter of 3 -14 young, with one female having 5 to 10 litters in a year!!:coffee:

Based on this, should I consider using poison?

I'd use poison only as an absolute last resort @clueless1 - firstly there is the inherent risks involved, given you have children around, but also that it can in some cases cause a secondary problem; when a mouse ingests the poison, it will not die there and then, and typically will go back to its nest or another hiding place and die there - the trouble being that the corpse decomposes and absolutely stinks the place out. If you don't know where they are nesting whilst they are alive, it is going to be even harder to find them once they are dead.

Keep going with the traps for now, and you will find that the steady stream of mice suddenly stops - - keep the traps out for a couple of weeks thereafter to ensure you are completely clear though.

I think I might have found and destroyed the nest last night. A cardboard box that I had been keeping old plant pots in had what looked like shredded paper, seeds, bits of fluff etc in it, about 2 inches deep.

I kind of stuck for a few days before I can finish clearing, as I can't make further progress til I've been to the tip at the weekend, so there are still plenty of alternative hideouts.

Sounds like an ideal wee den for them - I had them in a similar box in the shed here a couple of years back; they ate every seed, corm and bulb that was in there and made a right old mess of the shed.

Check areas where there is a warmth or cosiness - around the compressor of a fridge or freezer seems to be a favourite, as is around hot water tanks or in any insulation (loft or wall)

I would continue using the traps to catch the mice:dunno:

I remember, years ago when we had Rabbits in a Hutch in the garden for the Kids, that I noticed a mouse inside the Hutch helping itself to the Rabbit food while the Rabbits just looked on. So I moved the Rabbits to another Hutch and kept the same food in the first one along with two traps. I ended up terminating 37 mice.:dunno::coffee:

I wanted that game for ages when I was a kid, but never got it. Then screwball scramble came out and I wanted that instead, and never got that either. Except one day I did. My mam was trying to have a serious chat with someone, but I was nagging, so I got paid to go away for an hour. I ran full sprint all the way to the shop. I was right proper pleased with my purchase. I played it at every opportunity for about 3 days, then got bored of it.
