things i learned today

It has always been a standard response round here, if you whinge that you've hurt, say, your foot, someone will offer to inflict pain on the other foot so you don't notice the original pain anymore.

Very unscientific. Or so I thought.

It seems scientists have actually studied the idea of stinging people with nettles to reduce some other pain.

Mrs Scrungee has known about this for many years, if I whinge about being served peapod or potato peeling soup, she serves me nettle soup - works every time!

Being from your neck of the woods I know exactly what you mean, is it the same around the country?
As a child if you dared to say your grazed knee hurt you would be given the option of the other leg being chopped off so you didn't notice your grazed knee anymore???!!!!

Mind you I was brought up in the seventies and it wasn't exactly pc around here back then, oh those where the days

 

I agree.... if I hurt myself and cried ... my Dad would say ... I'll give you something to cry about in a minute... it's a bl**dy scratch what you winging about (my leg would be hanging off)..... but he always made it go better and bring a smile back to my face

 

If I hurt a finger or toe, I'd get "you've still got nine more". For an arm or leg it's "you've got another one".

Yes Anthony.... blood gushing out everywhere... I was dying from loss of blood.... I was on my 4 wheel rolling blades and boy did I hit the ground hard.... I used George our (Pyrenees mountain dog) to pull me faster telling him there was a pussy cat ahead.... never again..... Dad confiscated my wheels until I learnt the dog was a pet and not to do silly things with.... ie... you could have been run over... the dog could have had a heart attack... what happened if you knocked somebody over.... all I could think was .... never mind all that my leg is hanging off..

 

I always play down any bumps and knocks my two lads get. Of course I don't like to see them hurtthemselves, but if you pander to them, you make them soft, which means they'll go through life upset about every little ache or pain.

My many, many bumps and scrapes have accumulated so I now have arthritis in my foot. It hurts. But because I was raised to play down these things, I get on with things and enjoy my life. If I'd been turned into a softy as a kid, then right now my foot pain that will never go away completely would really be ruining my day.

I soooo agree, it didn't matter that you where bleeding, it was making a mess on the Lino
Then my Mam would put some anti septic solution(home made) on said area
It won't hurt, she'd say
I don't know how I survived
Of course I do, it's called tough love
