I have lots of containers on my patio and have them all (mostly) on feet, but the cats have a habit of knocking them over mainly the smaller lighter ones.

My question is: do they really need to be on feet? I think during the winter it's important because of frost but can I take the feet away without doing too much damage?

    Thanks peeps;)

They are terracotta "feet" that the pot stands on to keep it frost free and to help drainage. Ha Ha I can't describe them any other way!! They will be by the containers at the garden centre. Hopefully someone more intelligent will be able to describe them better...

only problem with omiting the feet is you may get stains on the slabs, shouldnt be a hudge problem with the smaller pots though.

I like those frog feet! I always put my pots on something to raise them up a bit, as I find the drainage holes get clogged if I don't. Don't think it's so important with smaller pots or in Summer. You can use small bits of wood or brick.

Love your your frogs feet Lyn and Shelby maybe you can see what we are talking about from Lyns photo.

Thanks for your input think I'll leave the big pots where they are on feet and make the smaller pots footless...and fancy free!!

I have about 40 large pots and have never used feet. Its too much of a hastle. Other than the staining that Pro Gard mentioned, it really only important in winter. But you may be emptying the pots or putting them under cover at that time anyway.

I think feet are a good idea it does help keep drainage holes clear, also helps to keep worms out of the pots and deters slugs and snails from easy access, I use the metal standy things that look like trivits.
