Kohl Rabi.....

    I've found a packet of Kohl Rabi in my seed tin....whats that all about:dunno:does anyone grow it and what does it taste like AND does it need alot of room to grow..

    Turnip-like. Flavour is a bit bland, we grow it an dice raw with cooked-but-cold Beetroot and some Greek yoghurt. It makes a nice coloured salad! I plant them about 6" apart, so doesn't take up a lot of space along the row.

      I put some in for Sis about 3 weeks ago, sown direct into bed then thin out. Most of them have come up. Not the sort of thing that grabs me though.

      Thay can be sweet if picked when small (golf ball size), I peel, then peel again the whole lump and these peeled slices go into stir fries or salads, if I cook with it it's not cooked per say...just warmed through. I've often thought it would be a great chutney additive but there has never been any left when chutney time arrives.

      I must try Kristens idea with yoghurt and beetroot.

        tastes a bit suede-like I think
        you can eat it raw, just peel and then cut in slices (thick as your little finger) and munch
        it can sometimes get a bit woody, therefore don't leave them to long in the soil, but many new varieties have been bred to be less woody
        You could let them grow to tennis ball size at least, but even much bigger, just check if they get woody by eating one of them
        if you want to cook it: peel and cook either whole or already scliced in slightly salted water, then prepare a sauce hollandaise (yum) and have it togther with sth meaty(meatballs, sausages, roast)+potatoes
