Last year our plum tree was lush with gorgeous plums.
We had a new fence between us and the neighbours so had to prune back the tree rather hard in April. I believe a Plum tree should be pruned in late Summer???

Anyway, the last few weeks, the leaves have been seriously eaten and there are little bubble thingies all over the stems. Is this because I pruned it at the wrong time but had to because of the new fence. Only a couple of plums this year but would anybody kindly suggest what should do and just have better luck next year. Have been out there today getting off all the bubbly things and cutting it back as it looks horrid. Thanks!!!!!!

Any chance of a pic of the 'bubbly thingies'? So that we are better able to see if they're some sort of growth, sap oozing out or whether are they 'alive'? That way we'll be in a better position to help with that problem.

June is a good time to prune plums (plenty of 'how to do it' info on the 'net' - some with diagrams some with videos), as it helps prevent silver leaf.

Some people say that a healthy plum tree should produce a reasonable amount of fruit every year, however, we had a Victoria plum tree (until 'the hurricane' knocked it over!) and no matter what we did, one year it would produce anything up to 50lb of plums, the next we'd get a couple of pounds - and that was only if we beat the wasps to them!

Sadly, we didn't have 'the net' when we had our plum tree, but had we done so, I think I'd have started by seeing what suggestions the RHS website gives, also, there's bound to be someone here who can point you in the right direction re: 'fruiting issues'.

Thanks but as said had to cut it back because of neighbours fence!!!!!
June July is the time to prune them anyway. Am confident it will be fine again next year! Not sure how old, been here just 2 summers and its well established and last year we had lots and lots of plums!
