Pruning Pyracantha

    When is the correct time to prune my pyracantha that I'm training up a wall

    In the Spring is a good time to really shape your wall shrub. You can cut any outward pointing branches back to just a few inches or so....or just beyond the flower buds if these can be seen. Shorten other branches a bit too, to encourage a nicely shaped framework. In the summer, the shrub will make new growth and spoil all of your hard work! Cut back the new growth to about 3 leaves after the fruit which is now forming. This lets the sun get to the berries and also lets you see the berries!
    (Actually, Pyracantha is pretty tough and you can get away with pruning it anytime if you need to! The above method will probably give you the best berries though.)

    I do mine now!

    You can cut back any off the new growth, back to the berries.

    If you want to cut it back harder, then wait til late winter.

    just wear lots of thick clothing - its viscous stuff
