I planted tomatoes and peppers in cardboard tubes in february in an very slightly heated outhouse plastic roofed and walled. they are about three inches high now and have two to four leaves but spindlyish stems is this normal? \Do they have a chance as the ones in the garden centre actually are nearly full size and have tomatoes on them.
Have I done soemthing wrong like should i have fed them something - Should I give up and buy soem ready mades?

Hi Lapod Gardening Is all about time and energy
and Patience learning and enjoyment,There Is nothing as good as growing from seed ,I would nurture the ones you have and by all means get some from your local GC for a stand by ,But d,ont ever give up on growing from seed,we all make mistakes, and have disasters from time to time.Yes its easy to get them from the GC but
you do,nt get the same sense of achievement and enjoyment as you will seeing your own seeds
Changing from one seed into a plant covered in fruit or flowers . [IMG]

Your toms sound fine, the GC will of sown theirs much earlier than you.
I have found that toms dont like being planted in cardboard tubes, dont know why but mine never grow as well when I have tried it. Pot them on and feed and water them.

AND give them loads of light

Woo is right it is nice to be able to grow your own from seed and watch them grow and fruit, but sometimes and that's me included have to resort to the GC to buy plants if our own fail and we haven't got the time to start again.I did this with beetroot last year ,brought them as seedlings from a farm shop then pricked them out and potted them on and then out and I had beetroot that were monsters. The best I have ever grown.Never feel like you have to grow everything yourself, and it isn't cheating to buy from GC,so no need for guilty feelings...Happy Gardening :D
