Will & Testament

Hi all, don't wish to be morbid but wondered if any of you on here would know about this:-

if i put down on paper what i want to happen with me & my effects after i die do i have to pay a legal person to 'sign' it?

Say i put in writing everything, won't just leave it in the house though cos you never know what happens, give it to a solicitor & say pay �£20 for him to keep it, it is OK? I think you have to have 2 witnesses or something, but i could do that. Does it have to be a legal person?

I know you can buy those DIY Wills & all that, but i just wondered why i can't write out my wishes & then that's that. Am i being very naive?

This is not a question to get a debate, because i'm dying or because or anything bad. Also not because i have alot to leave - boo hoo! I'm looking forward to the spring - planting & all. Just thinking about things.

Wondered if anyone here knows about anything from the 'norm', solicitors, executors etc.

Thanks Marley, will have to take some time (not now) to look at all this. Seems abit horrible of me to hijack this site when i don't need it, but then I may well do so probably better to know sooner than later.

hello borrowers: as far as I know a document with your will has no value unless signed in front of a lawyer, but I cannot imagine it being an expensive procedure.
I think it is very wise, however not pleasant, to think of matters surrounding death in good time. It is a way to make your descendants feel that you were thinking about them, and a way to allow them to deal with the painful matter of your disappearance in the smoothest possible way, without adding unnecessary worries.

For goodness sake don't try to make your own will. It does NOT have to be made by a solicitor but it DOES have to comply with the Wills Act to be legal
It can be relatively inexpensive to make. Come on ... if you have money to leave you must have enough to be able to afford to make a will
You should be able to make a will for less than �£50 ... I have charged as little as �£25 for an existing client

Its not just about leaving money but often these days about apointing an executor who then has the authority to sell off property/ contact finace companys etc in order to settle debts/ loans!

When we made our wills (a few years ago now) we were told the reason it is best for a solicitor or somebody in that profession to make it is that however clear you think you have written it - somebody may be able to interpret it another way.
This is especially important if you have property involved.

 

when my granda died my mum had to pay the soliciter for his will. there want even really much, no proprty or money, just personal effects that she could have taken away anyway. :confused:
