Box

Hi folks. Today me and the mrs went to the GC to buy a couple of plants ( as you do ) and decided to buy some Box. On the label it said 12 plants per metre. Thinking no more of it we bought 24 plants (for around a 2 metre run) Just went to plant them out and straight away it looked way too many. Question is, how far apart do they need to be ? Freddy, for a decent box hedge, they need to be about 4 inches apart.:thumb:

Forgot to add, that you need 2 spare per metre.:p:D

 

It DOES seem rather a lot, but if Dai says so, good enough for me :D

 

If they were bare root, you`d plant them even closer.:thumb:

Thats for people that have no patience.
Anyway, what is a box hedge?
Box gets big and reasonably fast, so why is it relegated to tiny scrawny hedges, closely clipped and mutilated.

Tut, Pete, I`ve not sold him any yet.:( If you didn`t plant them so close England wouldn`t have their great knot gardens.:wink:

Two important questions - which type of box have you bought and how big do you want your hedge to be? The RHS suggests a range of planting distances - from 4" up to 16".

Hi Flinty. On the pack is says Buxus. I'd like the hedge to be 12" - 18" and around 12" wide.
