I am sure this bit of humour has been posted before but it's the way it's told............
    (obviously I copied from somebody's website :D )
    ==================================================

Here's a trick guaranteed to provide HOURS of "entertainment":

    Go to "Command-prompt"

    Type in: FORMAT C://

When Prompted with "Are You Freaking SURE!?! All Information will be lost!"

Simply shrug , hiccupp, and point the lil' mousy-thingy-to "YES! Yes! Oh, YES!"

    Sit back and enjoy.

Erasing your hard drive would take five, ten minutes tops!

Maybe if you count the cryin' you'd have an HOURS worth of fun there!

Jjordie, you know that the mouse doesn't work in DOS (command prompt) mode. You have to type in 'yes'. lol. :D

    Disk Operating System.

In the dim distant days when the Goths were ravaging Rome and Windows wasn't invented, all commands to a computer were given by typing them in at the command prompt. For example if you wanted to know what was on a disk you would type 'dir' (for directory) which typed out a list on the screen. If you wanted to change to another folder (or directory as they were called in antedeluvian times) you would type 'cd' (for change directory) then the name of the folder.

There were about 50 commands and all the millions of people that don't understand Windows, wouldn't have had a cat in hell's chance with DOS.

There were two main DOSs, PCDOS by Creative Labs and MSDOS or MicroSoft DOS. Guess which one won.

So Mr Gates invented Windows which originally was only a little bit graphical and you actually loaded from DOS by typing 'WIN' at the command prompt. Windows 2 and Windows 3 (nobody seems to remember Windows 1) eventually gave way to Windows 95 which was based on the Apple Mac operating system and was the first fully graphical OS (operating system) for the PC. After many law suits where Apple sued Microsoft, they eventually sorted out who had the right to do what and so....... Windows 95 begat Windows 98 which begat Windows 98 second edition which begat Windows Millenium Edition. There was another strain of begatting for business use called Windows NT. When it got to NT version 5 the 2 strains decided they might as well get together and do communal begatting so they combined and begat Windows 2000 and that begat both Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP Home and Professional which begat Windows Vista, the latest total cock-up. Oh and there is a Windows Server 2007 in there somewhere which I assume was begat by Server 2003 but has been described as a total b*****d so we can't be sure which Windows begat it.

Now if that hasn't totally confused you then it should have. I only know it because my first born is a systems engineer. I may know it but I don't understand it. So, like me, anyone reading this is now a complete expert on the history of Windows. It all started with DOS. [IMG] [IMG] :(

Really, DOS hasn't gone away. It's still there, hiding, waiting to pounce on any unwary user who tries to delve too deeply into MS Windoze. If anyone is brave enough, go to START (bottom left of screen)click on RUN and type CMD. You will now have your very own DOS screen. Type HELP. You will now see a list of many more than 50 commands. Try typing one or two of them and see the results. These are the commands we yous't to rely on ( and someimes still do!). When your nerve finally cracks, type EXIT and you will be safely back in the warm, friendly, safe (?) environment of MS Windoze.
BTW, John, Win2 wasn't the first 'front end' to use a Graphic User Interface (GUI). Long before Bill Gates was invented DOS had its own GUI. A sort of coloured in DOS and the mouse DID work.
AHHHH! Those were the daze.

The commands I miss are 'rd' to remove a directory and 'fdisk' which could f your disk faster even than formatting it (to get back to the original joke).

I'm so old that my first computer was a Commodore Pet. My son reckons I used Babbage's analytical engine and insists on calling me Pascal. :D Obviously Terrier is even older than me. [IMG]

Sarraceniac, I'm not sure if my first home computer can pull rank on your Commodore, it was an Acorn Atom and I never did upgrade it to it's full memory potential of 1K. [IMG]
