Need some inspiration as to what to put in my wall trough this year. Any ideas?. It's quite a shady area, only gets a bit of sun late eve. Looking for flowers that will hang right over. I usually cut holes and put flowers in the sides but hoping not ruin the liner this year. Thanks for your help. 20140616_094629~01.jpg

Dunno if it will be your cup-of-tea but I like the trailing foliage (Lime green and Dark purple available, also interesting shaped leaves) of Ipomea batatas - they tend to arrive in garden centres round about now.

Here's some, early in the season (so not trailing much at that time) I grew a couple of years ago:

That is lovely Kristen but I need to brighten up the front of the house so flowers I think are much needed.

Did flowers for years - usually Lobellia and Fuchsia etc. Now prefer leaf colour - no dead heading, and immediate colour without having to wait for the plants to get into flowering-stride.

Bit late for this year, but Caladiums have brightly colours foliage :)

Appreciate it isn't for everyone though :)

Monty Don did Dahlia David Howard and some Cannas I think. To my mind David Howard has monstrously large flowers (and the plant is quite a beast). Nice dark foliage. Monty used a large pot (although it seemed relatively small to the Dahlia size to me!) and I was thinking of doing the same in my tubs this Summer - I have some David Howard cuttings I was wondering where to plant!

Not going to fit in your window box though

On the flowering front: there was some talk, last year, of peoples' success with Begonia - there were a couple of varieties from memory Inferno and Santa Cruz

I do love those Caladiums. Might try them next year mixed in with a few flowers. I usually do lobelia and petunias or calabracia but fancied something different this year. Not usually that keen on begonias as don't like the smell. :mute:
