    Hi,
    Newbie after some gadget advice.
I want to aerate the lawn and have seen some spiked strap on shoe things at garden centre. Are they any good? Seem much easier than using garden fork like father on law. I've used a mower type push thing with spikes but they didn't seem go go in very well. I'm all for an easy life but need it to work.
    It's fairly sandy soil here.
    Thanks
    D

The tines on the strap on things aren't really thick enough or long enough to do much good for the lawn, though they will develop your thigh and leg muscles quite well!
Cheapest method is a good sharp fork (good for legs, chest, and just about every other muscle too!) and next best would be a spring-loaded stand-on core remover. I've got one of those push things but it's a waste of time and effort and I've given up on it.
You can hire motorised aeriators from some garden centres.

    Thanks for that.
Have inherited a fork sharpened to lethal proportions. How deep do i need to be going to help the lawn? Do i need full length of forks and how far apart should the holes be?
Think this could take a while...
    Cheers

Made a start with the scary looking fork yesterday, good excercise. Will need a few mugs of tea to complete the job. Now glad my garden is not so big.

    Cheers

:dh: Hi D, the only time I am glad my garden is smallish is when one has a job like this to do....! :D I have tried most of the quick fix aerators but none are as good as the good old sharp fork.... You won't need to go to the Gym this week..!!! :D:lollol:
