My pond has been frozen recently but at one side its remained free of ice.
The fish, common goldfish of varying colours, have been collecting around the unfrozen areas.

Its not conclusive but I'm getting the impression that the ones of certain colours seem to stay together.
Any ideas, this picture is as I say not conclusive, but it does show the tendency for that.

That's surprising because I've never noticed that before.

I shall have to keep an eye out for that when I see a pond with goldfish. I would have checked on my brother's fish but in a match just before the big freeze it was, Heron 30, Goldfish Nil.

    Herons are not good Kindred.
I get the occasional one but they tend not to linger.

I see herons flying over the pond on the odd occasion but I'm sure they throw me a look of disgust because I only have sticklebacks in my pond.

Overhead, they remind me of those big birds coming out of Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. When they're directly overhead you and only a few feet up in the air, they give you a just slightly queasy feeling.

I'm going to keep a bit of a watch and see if the fish are grouping regarding colour, or if its just my imagination.

I think they are definitely grouping according to their colour, safety in numbers? I used to keep cockatiels and they used to roost at night in colour groups!! I never realised how true that saying of Birds of a Feather really is!!

Thankyou Val, I've been looking from time to time and its not something you can be certain about, but I'm still seeing groups of the same colour collecting together.

It may well be what you say, none want to stand out to predators, so the best place to hide is amongst your own kind.
