    Hi,
My neighbour has grown some broccoli from seed this year and it is doing well since it was transplanted into her garden. I do not know what type it is and neither does she, but it has suddenly formed all these pretty yellow flowers.
She does not know when to expect to be able to harvest the broccoli and a family member has told her that now there are flowers there will be no broccoli to harvest - is this true?

Can anyone advise on what she should expect and when as we're both at a loss! Ive looked on the net but its rather confusing, esp as we dont know what type it is. The stems are 5-6ft tall now with branches of yellow flowers at the top.

    Many thanks

    Hi Busybee,

Yeah, unfortunatly broccoli is the unopened flower bud of the plant. You might try cutting all the flowers off, you should get some side shoots, but they will be smaller.

Ziggy is correct, you have to eat the unopened flower buds, once they start flowering you have missed the harvest.

The brocolli has gone to seed and is past.
The flowers are edible if you want to eat them but is not just the same as "green " brocolli. Sauteed in a little butter and garlic they are allright.

so the tiny buds that are the unopened flower actually IS the broccoli she should have harvested? But it looks nothing like the broccoli you see in the shops!

The is a fair bit of confusion over what broccolli is, even the supermarkets and seed catalogues mix up the various types which doesn't help. The big green heads you generally see in the shops is actually Calabrese whereas the normal garden grown stuff is usually Purple Sprounting - it is a lot smaller (but nicer to eat in my opinion) :thumb:
