Hello, I recently bought 2 very young buddleja buzz's. I understand that these types are dwarf buddlejas. I have them in pots on the patio.

All I want to know is what care do they require and do they need special feed.

    Thank you.

    Hi ArcticFox

I too bought 'Buzz'. As I got them late last season, they haven't done much in the way of growing yet and are still sitting in their original pots. Like you, I plan to pot them on but keep them in containers rather than planting them in the ground. As far as I know they require no special treatment at all. Water them and give them an occasional feed just like any other plants. As my plants are already displaying all the scraggy tendencies of their bigger relatives, I would suggest giving them a good prune after flowering, otherwise you'll end up with rather scrawny, shapeless specimens. Make sure they're well established before you do this, obviously.

    Thank you for you advice.

They are only about 10cm high. It was a special in the bbc gardeners world mag. Send £4 p+P and you get 2 Buzz in return.
    Only received them on Saturday.

I've got to admit I'm not really enthusiastic about the Buzz Buddlea and I do prefer the magnificence of the normal sized ones. Am I being "picky" in thinking the "Buzz" is just a fashion plant????:heehee:

    LOL!!

We don't have the room for 1 of the larger ones. If we had the room we would obviously have a few large ones.

Also, my 3yr old son loves bees and butterflies and birds.

I know it has been mentioned to prune the plant after flowering.

Is there a time of year when you should prune the plant back?
Also do you prune it HARD back? Meaning right to the soil?

    Just had a look at these on T&M's website after seeing this thread and this is the aftercare they recommend;

"Feed and water container-grown plants regularly. Buddleja planted directly into borders will require only occasional attention. In spring, prune Buddleja ‘Buzz’® back to a permanent low framework of 3 or 4 buds from the base of the plant. Deadhead faded buddleja flowers to prolong the flowering season."

In this case, I think it will be necessary. Buddlejas don't have a beautiful shape and the dwarfs are just as scraggy as their bigger counterparts. The untidiness - and the fact that I have very limited space - is the reason why I haven't gone for a larger plant.

The only thing i've done to my Buzz's is this.

Watered really well when potting up.
      Place in FULL SUN.
Keep watered every 2-3 days until established.

My 2 buzz's are now growing VERY quickly. Still no blooms, but not expecting much as this is their first year.

I have not fed them in any way.
