Edible vegdabals

    So, what unusual vegetables have you tried? :rolleyes:
    How was it served?
    Would you recomend?

    Jerusalem artichokes- fried in hot fat like chips- excellent
    Tomatillo- in pasta sauce or salsa-worth a try
    Fennel [bulbs]- steamed with fish, or roasted with other veg.- I really like it
    Scorzonera- gratin- strange
    All these are easy to grow, which is why I've tried them! [​IMG] [​IMG]

    Tomatillo's are probably the most unusual veg I've had,grew them last year for the first time, made a salsa with chilli very nice.They took up quite a lot of room in the greenhouse though don't think I will do them this year. :D

    I hadn't tried Celeriac until last year, goes lovely in a Vegetable Stew with Vegetable suet balls ;)

    Salsify is very nice roasted as you would potatoes or parsnips
    Jerusalem artichokes are not to be recommended if you have any trouble with your stomach and they are incredibly invasive as plants.
    Our unusual veg for ths year is Chinese artichokes (Stachys affinis).

    Yes, I agree Palustris! I planted them as a screen and they grew with no more help, were still there when I left. The chickens kept them under control. Good in a big pot though. I'm afraid I have a cast iron stomach, can eat anything! We also used to roast them as a change from potatoes.
    I like globe artichokes too, will have to try chinese ones. [​IMG]

    No room in the garden these days so I may have to visit a shop.

    A couple of years ago I grew asparagus peas. The plants were quite leggy, the crop very small, and they tasted vaguely of cardboard. Has anyone had better results?

    Yes I also grew asparagus peas last year, To enjoy them at their best they must be picked when the pods are 1-1/2ins.long, and then straight into the pot, or better still the steamer, they loose flavour quickly, I imagine that is why we never see them in the shops.
    Like all pods the more you pick the more you get.

    Okra.... I have grown it once but it needed a lot of heat, didn't produce enough "fingers" to use but has a beautiful yellow flower(hibiscus family).
    I have had okra in an Indian bahji which is probably the best way to have it as just steamed or boiled on its own would be horribly sticky and tasteless :eek: .
