Hurray ... I've just come in from surveying my estate (cough, cough), in particular the potted "trying to grow something" part of it ... and my three, yes, all three, ginger nublets (I may have just made that word up!) have popped up and are waving at me! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

However, my bit of giant cane that rooted itself appears to have died! :( Not that I really need a giant cane here!

I over winter then, in a warm green house. [IMG] Not one has ever made it to another season. They just keel over & die & I don't know why.... [IMG] I bet you have better luck with your climate..... :D

Yes, I'm very chuffed. I actually want it for the leaves, not the roots! :D :D It's so cheap here to buy ... can't remember the kilo price 3,49 Euros? (£2.45)

My other thing at the moment is lemon grass ... so far three out of four going great! Again, really want it for the leaves! Have you tried this?

If you're talking about Lemon Grass, Liz, One of the famous TV chefs (can't remember which one) said if you buy a pack and there's a little bit of the white on it, you can root this easily!

I had no problem germinating lemon grass, it was the first thing I got to germinate in jan in fact, nice warm airing cupboard is all it needs. I have harvested some already - beats paying £1 for 2 poxy sticks in the supermarket, and the leaves make amazing tea. My cat eats most of them though.

My sister sent me a piece of lemon grass root and it is growing nicely, I have it out on a windowsill in our Wintergarten. Either Gato, our cat, has not found it yet or is just not into eating such grass, for which I am thankful.
I potted 2 nublets (I like your new word LofL!) of ginger recently, have the pot on the kitchen windowsill but so far nothing has come of it. How long do they take to start growing MF?

It is now 12 days since I potted those 2 ginger nublets and nothing has happened except that I think the nublets are pushing themselves out of the soil!

My neighbour gave me a piece of ginger that had proper shoots about 1 cm long so that has been potted now and I have hopes of finally having a ginger plant.

Hi, K-D! I can't remember how long it took for my to show themselves but I think it was several weeks. I kept them moist and out of the sun and have only just moved them where they get a little in the evening ... figured I'd get them accustomed to it gently rather than crisping them immediately! :D :D

I have potted up my three lemon grasses together in a large pot and they're looking nice, already about 50cm tall!

Hello peeps, I did this with a lump of ginger from tescos. I did really well until I left it out all winter, it got lost amoungst all my then pots. If I remember rightly I half buried it in moist compost and put it in a hot window, and took a couple of weeks :D

Yeah I've grown ginger from supermarkets, it rots easily at first, so go easy on the watering at the begining.
After the first rooting period lots of water and humidity, drier in winter and not below about 10C absolute minimum.
Cant help thinking you've left it a bit too late this year to start kedi, but good luck anyway. [IMG]
