Many of you will remember back in May I told you my youngest daughter had emigrated to Canada.

Well here I go again. My son leaves for good early tomorrow morning, he is marrying an American and emigrating to Columbus, Ohio. He, after 33 years is the last one to leave the nest, and again it's broken my heart after my daughter's departure back in May.

I know we have to let go and I'm thankful my eldest daughter is still here, but it hurts! My hubby and I now have to get used to being on our own again after 35 years rearing our family.

Because I fear flying I will not be going to his wedding in October, although my husband is going.

    The tears freefall.........:cry3::cry3:

What can one say, Sheal, that would make you feel better? Hmmm, I don't think there is, is there. It is heart breaking when kids move on and leave for far away places, but at least it not like years ago when you had to rely on the mail to keep you in touch. Now you can use technology to speak to and see them if you get things set up right. Wipe your tears, Kid, you're too nice to cry.

You could try lorazepam. You would probably sleep the whole way!

Sheal YOU WILL FLY and go to the wedding, you know you want to

Contact BA (British Airways) they will help you, and your fear of flying will be gone
Not only will their programme help you but your wish to attend his wedding will help you even more
Trust me YOU can do it, and imagine how proud he will be of you, and what you have achieved for HIM

I am the same as you, I want my children and Grandchildren to have a better life, but I would be heartbroken if/when they go, THOUGH the love I have for them and to better themselves will overcome it for me, even though I have nothing other than my humble home (standard ex council house with very small garden) I am looking at releasing equity, they are better having it now than when I have gone, (wait ten years for the cash to better themselves)

Please be strong, I know it is hard, but you will eventually come round

You WILL FLY you can do it, and do it for your SON

I do not know what your fear of flying is about, only my wife lives her life by the Film POLLY ANNA, "What is for you will not go by you"

She is crippled and in a wheelchair after the operation that "will change her life"
Well it certainly did that for her
          I cry
She says what is for you will not go by you and soldiers on

Please feel strong, realise he is going to a better life, and with effort you will see him in SIX WEEKS

Kind Regards Jack McHammocklashing (Feeling your pain)

Your fault that I have to stand three hours with me legs crossed, waiting for the green light to come on for the loo :-) 200 passengers two loo's and one permanently occupied :-(

My Doctor offered me Valium, but said he wanted me to at least get on a plane first. I enquired about Virgin Airlines course, but couldn't get as far as booking it. I'm a bit of a freak really when it comes to this! I also have a claustrophobia and being in control problem aswell, so it makes it a total, no, no!

Funnily, I didn't have any of these fears before I had my children.

As you say Armandii, technology is brilliant now and I skype with my daughter and will do the same with my son. But it's not the same as having a hug!

I'll get over his going in time, as with my daughter, but right now it's hard.

Thanks for your support everyone, it helps. :)

Sheal, there's nothing I can say that will make things easier, I wish there was. I'm sure we all feel for you. I send you a big hug.

As for flying, I'm sure you know as well as I do that its an irrational fear. It is statistically the safest form of transport by a massive margin.

If you speak to your GP, he/she will be able to prescribe medication to help you stay at ease during a flight. I know this because my sister has to do this every time she goes on holiday.

I'm a nervous flyer, the approach to landing scares me the most. There are stewardesses on board who are most certainly not 'trolley dollys', they know their stuff, and if you let them know that you are nervous they will often sit with you and explain what's going on. The fear usually comes from not understanding what's happening, what a particular sound was etc. Once they explain that, for example, the clunking noise is just the undercarriage coming down, or the vibration is just because the pilot has put the flaps down so that we slow down for the approach, then it becomes a whole lot less scary.

Also, if you book with an airline that lets you reserve specific seats, nervous flyers should always ask for a seat just in front of the wings. There you don't notice the engine noise so much, and you feel less turbulence (which in my experience is never any more bumpy than being in a car on a dual carriageway).

My Dad has a fear of flying, but every year he ends up getting on a plane to go on holiday after about a week of worrying.

I think the build-up towards the flight is the worst thing, because you think the worst things are going to happen, so you can't relax and then you feel that you can't get on it.

I don't like telling people what to do, because If I didn't like flying, there's no one or nothing that would get me on one!

But with today's technology, I'm sure you could watch the wedding via Skype?

smoke a spliff before boarding the plane and watch movies during the flight

Aaaw Sheal poor you, my sisters daughter emigrated to New Zealand last year, and had her first baby(my sisters first grandchild) just last month on my sisters birthday, but as kyleleonard says you need to get skype, she saw her granddaughter within a couple of hours, I know its not the same as giving them a cuddle, but nearly as good, they chat every day, she says because she can see her on the screen its just like her being in the same room.
Hope you can overcome your fear and get to the wedding.

Sorry to hear your news Sheal, you'll find ways to keep in touch - can't remember if this was suggested last time but what about taking a cruise to get there?

                  Hi Sheal,
sorry to hear that you are sad about your son leaving, but the good thing is that he will be on the same side of the ocean as his sister.
I too don't like flying, for me it is more that I don't like to leave the ground than anything else.
The furthest I have been is a flight to Iceland which lasts three hours and it is plenty for me. I don't think I want to go any further.
I am aware that accidents happen on the sea as well, but I would rather go by ship all the way rather than by plane.

If you stick to the plane, you could go through Iceland and Greenland to make the journey easier to digest.

I understand your fear, Sheal - I have yet to convert my provisional driving licence into a full one!! I have nightmares about driving; I just don't think my reactions and general level of awareness of hazards are good enough and I'm not sure if I could live with myself if I caused an accident. But just think - no one is asking you to fly the plane. All you have to do is sit there and order a nice stiff drink. Go for it!
