Hello to all from sunny Belize, Central America, well actually it's a bit wet at the moment, just had Tropical Storm Karl pass through.

I am not new to gardening, but new to gardening in this climate, so I am here to learn and hopefully to help.

Look forward to getting to know you all.

Hello Jan, and welcome to GC 0)

Patchakan is a rather unusual place for one of our members to come from :). I don't think any of us would expect a member to join from such a small village in a country that few would know about.

I really admire you for setting up home there :thumb:. Mrs shiney and I went through Patchakan (sorry we didn't stop :hehe:) nearly four years ago when we were touring the ancient sites in Central America. What we saw of the country was very interesting but I don't think I could live with the climate :(.

I hope you enjoy being a member here :gnthb:

Hi [IMG] Jan, so nice to have members from overseas come to join us, I think we are a pretty friendly bunch here.. :D Have you been in Belize long.? I think another one of our members was there earlier in the year for a holiday as well.. Is gardening a challenge there or is it fertile soil & things flourish..?? Look forward to seeing you around the forums.. :thmb:

Shiney, hope you enjoyed your visit to Belize, if you ever get this way again, let us know we can meet up somewhere.

I know what you mean about the climate, it does take some getting used to.

Marley Farley, we have been in Belize just over three years, within a month of being here, we were welcomed by Hurrican Dean, Category 5, wow what an experience, but one I hope we don't get too often.

Gardening can be a challenge here, mainly knowing what to grow and at what time of year. For instance I could be plant melons now, for a Brit to hard to get your head round melons in Mid September. With regard to fertility, like most of Belize you clear you bush land to build your house and garden, we are told our land had not been touched for 90 years, good no chemicals. The ground is good, but because you get a lot of low land at this end of Belize I am bringing in top soil to raise everything slightly, otherwise everything floods when we have the rainy season. So fertility is not much of an issue. I mulch with the waste from the chickens and goats.

I could write about Belize all day, but don't want to ramble too much, if anyone wants to know more, you ask. I will post some pictures as soon as I get time.

Thanks all for your warm welcomes.:gnthb:

:) Hello JanG and welcome to GC.

I know where you are coming from adjusting to different seasons than we were used to in the UK. Having bought this particular property 13 years ago, we have been living here in Southern Portugal for 9 years now and from a scratch piece of land I have created a tropical/sub-tropical garden which I adore. I am the gardener and fortunately it is basically 'mainenance only' mode now.

It just takes knowledge of what you can grow and time and lots of perservence and most of all patience. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. We have very dry summers where, like this year we had one night of rain in four months ... and a brief shower last night. We are coming into our rain season and it is our most colourful season. We are not terribly hot ... we did not hit 40c this year and only the high 30s for a few weeks, normally low-mid 30s.

I would love to see pictures.

I hope you enjoy the forum ... it's nice to have another 'foreigner' on board.

PS Thank you for your comment on the pet thread. k-l xx

Welcome to GC Jan, I love the Boa and whatever was on your roof (looked a little Pit Viper like) in your wildlife pics.:gnthb:

We couldn't identify the one on the roof, we have a book on snakes, the nearest we could get was somesort of rat eating snake. The two on the tree are known as garden snakes.

The picture of Hubby with the snake is indeed a boa and was taken at Belize Zoo.
