    Hi all

I've been away for nearly two weeks, to spend some time up on my piece of land up north.

Some of you may remember this thread:

Well I'm pleased to say that all has turned out surprisingly well.

Almost all of the trees I planted over christmas have got new growth on them despite being decimated by evil rabbits, and I scored a load of tree protectors at auction that I've now put over them to give them a fair chance.

I've also put in a couple of apple trees, which I don't hold out much hope for seeing as they were sold as bare root ones and stored for who knows how long in a warm shop, but they were only a fiver each so I thought I'd give them a bash.

I also planted a small (about 3ft high) weeping willow, and took a picture of that next to my baby son, with the view that by the time he is interested in anything like that the tree is likely to be quite large, given the speed that willow grows at.

And finally on the subject of trees, the most amusing but bizarre thing has happened. Late last autumn we clear a lot of dead wood out of a blackthorn thicket. Among it was some elder. I had toyed with the idea of planting a new hedgerow across my top field to divide it into two, but binned the idea. However before binning the idea, I used poles of elder to make the line where I thought I'd start the new hedgerow. While tidying up I went to pull these sticks out and found that one of them has a lot of healthy new growth at the bottom, so I left it alone.

Anyway, on arriving back home, and dreading what state the garden would be in after nearly two weeks of neglect, I found it all still there, growing well, and most importantly the bald patches on my lawn that I reseeded are no longer bald. The new grass is growing nicely:)

All in all, it seems to be a bit of luck so far:)
