We moved into our new home in January and I am now starting on the front borders. This is the first time I have had to tackle the soil with a hammer and bolster, we are on clay and it bone dry.
    Before and after.

    Looks good Lad. I

am on solid clay as well, but sharp sand and manure has made a huge difference.

Ha ha will do once I can get the soil dug, as you can see it was a lawn and so compacted.

If you have to use a bolster and hammer, then the sensible thing to do is wait for the rain that`s forecast. All you are doing in this dry weather is causing damage to the soil.:dbgrtmb:

I sympathise with you Lad - i live in Suffolk too and I've forgotten what rain looks like.

My garden, also on clay, is bone dry too and everything is suffering from the drought. I have been watering the new stuff and the pots but the trees are throwing off their leaves through stress.
