How can I overwinter Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) so that it will flower next year?

I am growing parsley on the windowsill and I know it is a biennial herb; once the current growth dies down, what should I do? Or does the plant just stay in leaf through the winter? As I have already been harvesting the leaves intermittently for culinary purposes, have I already blown it as far as letting the plant flower is concerned?

Will the plant die down at some stage? Should I change the pot and compost it is growing in?

If you keep it on your windowsill, the plant will just stay in leaf until next year, but not looking very happy. Then, at some stage early next summer, it should send up its flowering shoots and the leaves will get coarse and sparse. Conditions in your room and the amount of light it receives are likely to affect the timing and extent of this process.

From now on, your plant is past its best and IMHO, not worth repotting. But if you really want to nurse it to its final stage, repotting might help.

Parsley is a glorious herb and although I now grow it in pots myself, it's never been as luxuriant, tasty or durable as when I used to grow it in a deep, moist and shady side bed in a previous garden.
