Hi, as some of my poppies have now finished flowering I was in 2 minds whether to cut them all down to the ground or try and leave some for possible sowing ? When would be the best time to harvest seeds for planting next spring ? At the moment the pops are small and green after only just losing their petals.

oops, that should read pods, not pops !

You only need to leave a few, as they produce seeds in abundance. I wait until the pods open on their own.

Yes, Clueless is right, you just leave a few to spread seed naturally, and/or when the pods start to turn brown cut some off with around 3" of stem and place them in a paper bag or envelope in a dry place and then shake the seed, when they're ready, into the bag or envelope. Just don't forget to write the date and variety of seeds on the bag or envelope....as I did one time and confusion reigned!!:dunno::snork:

Okay, I might try that. I'll leave the pods to brown and about to burst, then I'll pick and brown bag them for planting in greenhouse next spring ?

Or if you're lazy, like me, they are always very willing to sow themselves!

I will leave some to self seed, and take a few for planting.
I must say, the poppies have been a really good show this year. Tons of growth and large strong flowers. By the way, these aren't the low growing poppies but large red poppies with big seed heads.
