I've got a HP printer, its not a great one but it does print photos resonably well.
I've been using Ilford satin paper with no problems, but I ran out so I bought some Ryman satin paper.
Well for starters it seems too thick for my printer, it doesnt bend too easily.
But the main problem is the ink doesn't dry.
Any ideas where I went wrong.

Sorry, can't help Pete as I only use packs of gloss photo paper from the Pound Shop.
Seems to work ok for me but then I'm no professional!

    :D

Pete: When I had paper feed problems with my HP printer and it used to grab several sheets at once, I noticed that the ink would smudge sometimes.

So your thicker sheets maybe at the root of the problem.

But I wonder if you have gone into printer preferences and selected....photo paper instead of inkjet? Just a thought! ;)

My printer does tend to grab all the sheets at once, so now I stand there and feed one piece in at a time.
Its not so much that the ink is smudging, its just not drying, it was still as wet as ever the next day.
i bought some more of the Ilford paper and there was no problem.
I have selected photo paper on the preferences as I thought both types of paper are photo paper, at least thats what it says on them.
Dag, are you suggesting that if I select inkjet it might dry?

    Same as mine Pete! ;)

Must admit, I have never tried using photo paper in it, never had the need. When I can find some I will give it a try and see what happens.

I don't just put in 1 sheet at a time any more, I found that by gradually advancing the paper start position in the tray you get to know where it should be, there just seems to be a lack of a proper reference position. Strange it was fine for the first 6 months and then suddenly I started getting problems, but now it seems ok. ;)

Yes - I have to feed single sheets of photo paper in. Never known ink to fail to dry, but sometimes it's very slow. I use Kodak Picture paper when I have to. Now, I rarely print out photos and if I do I either take the card to a high street Kodak lab or if they are no longer in camera, I transfer the photos to a cd and take that in. That way you get best quality prints which won't fade too soon. Home printed photos fade so quickly if framed and kept in bright light.

I buy lexmark photo paper from a local stationary shop it £5 for 2 boxes of it..as i have a lexmark 3 in 1 its ideal..
The only thing i have got to add to this is its not cost effective to print lots of photos ..you can upload your pictures to kodak online and they allways have offers on and will print them and you get them back in a couple of days..and the quality is better..

I was printing my calendar that I had compiled, I dont print many photos as such, it works out far too expensive.
This calendar is costing me an arm and a leg. :D
Was just a bit curious as to why the ink didn't dry, think I might e mail Ryman and see what they have to say.

Funny how ink/paper quality seems to vary. I've an A3 size print on thick standard (not photo-quality) ink-jet paper that was printed on an HP printer, that is now 5 years old and hasn't significantly faded and for three years it sat in full sun.
I've also got other prints A4 size done with Epson ink on various brands of matt and glossy photo-quality papers that now are several years old and haven't faded.
I'm currently using a Cannon printer and have no problems with sheet feeds for any thickness of paper, though with my previous two Epsons I did encounter occasional problems with multiple sheet feeding.

    A few suggestions -
Look on Ebay for bargain photo paper as you'll find mixed packs at good prices.
Google for the main suppliers sites as they often have trial offers of mixed packs.
    Google for "reviews" of ink.

I've never had a drying problem with Kodak papers or in fact with any of the "main brands" of photo papers and I've printed a couple of hundred photos of the last few years.
