I have been given a large blue plastic barrel with drainage holes and have filled it with home-made compost, in the hope of growing a decent sized pumpkin. Has anyone grown pumpkins in such containers? Havent planted it yet, so open to veg suggestions.

Hi Sumo,If you are going to grow a monster Pumpkin then your barrel probably won't take the weight. My largest was 51.5lb and I could hardly lift it,my hubby had that honour. It is a pity that it has drainage holes as it would have made a great water butt for when we get the heat wave in the summer. There might be someon else on here that may be able to help you with the Pumpkin though as we found they tend to travel long distances,so you might not be able to contain it [IMG]

Thanks Kandyfloss, I hadnt taken into consideration the pumpkin weight problem, probably because mine only got to the size of small oranges last year! Perhaps carrots would be a better option?

this is quite interesting and would really like to know if anyone has grown pumkins in containers as I have made a suggestion for my granson class at school to grow a pumkin for halloween.

I was going to put it in a big pot, thought it would be nice for the kids to see a vegetable grow. so they could understand where it comes from.

I have also arranged with another preschool another grandchild to start a veg plot. which also came from the suggestion grow a pumkin for halloween.

think I might need a little advice never grown pumkins before so any input would be welcome.

its ok growing pumkins in containers provided you keep feeding and watering it.I would use plenty of tree bark so the plant is kept moist.
