    Hi all,
can anyone let me what I can expect from a rotavator when trying to combine a 75mm layer of new, nicely friable, sandy clay loam, laid on top of an existing 75mm layer of loamy sand, which is very sandy, and equally friable?

This all sits on top of a clay base which I don’t want to touch.

I want to know how effectively it will combine the two soils. Does anyone know if it will be able to create a really well blended mix of the two?

And just to add some context, this is related to my other thread about replacing the soil for my lawn: Soil replacement for lawn

Would be grateful to hear if anyone can advise. Thanks

It will depend how deep into the soil your rotavator goes.
A very long time ago my Dad bought a big, heavy petrol rotavator which easily churned the soil up to a depth of about 30-40cm - it was a beast of a thing!
That was at my parents house with a huge allotment.

Now in my own property I have several raised beds and occasionally use a small, light electric rotavator to combine a top dressing onto the soil - that only churns up to a depth of about 10-12cm and due to its lightness it does bounce around quite bit and fling stones around, but it does the job.

With a clay-based substrate, ensure there's decent drainage or you'll get a patchy, mossy lawn.
    Good luck!
