Another smell that I don't smell now but my brain can still bring to the fore:- at the local butcher's was an all pervading slightly burnt smell.

Whenever anyone bought a chicken (they still had their heads on in those days) the butcher took it from the hook it had been standing on, hold it up by having his hand round its neck, and run a gas flame all over the body to burn off any remaining bits of feathers. The smell was more of chicken skin being heated than of burning feathers.

hope this hasn't put you off your lunch. :heehee:

Hot tar and creosote are another couple that spring to mind for me - a good friend of my dad's worked as a lorry driver on the road crews, and his lorry was the one that carried the hot tar that was being laid on new roads. He always smelt just like the hot tar every time I saw him - he must have been practically stewed in the stuff, as even his skin looked swarthy and darkly tanned.

And my best friends dad have a huge garden with wooden fences and sheds all over the place, and creosote was a common smell around his garden. Looking back now, he seemed to have something of an OCD regarding creosoting his fences, as he did them so frequently.
