Redstar's suggestion is good, but this is no laughing matter.

Sadly, because this is the third year it's happened, I think these lowlifes are so moronic they now merely see it as a game.

Whilst there are a number of things you can do, many of which have been suggested, (additionally, you can buy lockable hanging baskets, use laptop security cables or combination padlocks), the fact remains of course, that you shouldn't have to do any of them. My fear is, that if you secure the baskets too well, these eejits will merely rip the plants out - the more secure you make things like this, the more of a 'challenge' it becomes to them - it's sick, but true.

Short of 'giving in' and having nothing, you could replace with cheapie hanging baskets (they're still available in my local 'Pound Shop'), or you could fill the baskets with some artificial ivy or similar. Personally - for the remainder of this year at least - I think I'd put a large sign on the brackets which said 'Baskets stolen. Police aware.'

As a final, BTW - if you've spent quite a bit of money on these baskets and they're still being stolen, despite you having taken all reasonable steps to secure them, report it to the Police, they'll give you a 'crime number' and, if you've a mind, you can then make a claim on your house contents insurance.

May be a bit over the top, but if you could borrow an electric fence energiser, wire that to the hanging baskets then watch the little sods jump when they make contact.

My neighbour is a Road Surfacing Contractor and has fitted his premises with 6 CCTV cameras. One camera covers his driveway and the Layby over the road. We used to have a lot of rubbish dumped there, but there is not so much now. If anything happens we can show the Police the recordings, especially the ones of drivers relieving themselves in full view.
