Earlier this year I bought 2 Pericallis Senetti plants from a local garden centre, both were in flower and lasted for quite a while. As they died off I snipped off the dead parts. One of them started to sprout something from the base of the plant. At first I thought it was a weed of some sort, maybe it is. As you can see from the photo it has grown quite alot. I have no idea what it is. Can any of the more knowledgeable contributors identify it?

Yes, a type of reed. It's definitely not what you bought.

I think it's some kind of sedge, they often come up in my pots, not easy to pull out if you let them get established.

Right, but how could it be in amongst the flower in the pot it came in? I repotted it into the pot in the picture.

Reed and sedge seeds are often windborn, birds also tend to drop things. Could also have been in the potting material.

After I posted last query I thought it might have been in the compost. Thanks for info everybody.
