I bought a conifer on a whim but it had lost its label. Can anyone ID this from a small branch I snipped off? By the looks of it, it is quite mature looking at the sturdy trunk, is about 2 1/2 feet tall. I'm not good with conifers but thinking maybe cypress or juniper?

    Thanks

    Hi GG,

I've just found this on the tinternettywebby thingy and it's an excellent site shows the leaves/branches of all conifers.

Sorry I can't put a link up off my phone but this is their address .....

Looks a bit like Lawsons cypress to me, which I dont think is a true cypress.

I'm pretty certain it's Leylandii GG. Can we have a look at the whole conifer please?

Well here it is, just kept in the pot and heeled in at present. I hope you are wrong on this @Sheal as I wouldn't touch a Leylandii with a barge pole;) The chappy at the nursery said they'd had it a while and that it had not grown too much at all. Still, good that I know one way or the other. I think the original leaf cluster photo isn't good as it appears flat but it is a whorl shape, if that makes sense. @pete I'm not sure if it is Lawsons Cypress either ... @Anthony Rogers I can't see any ID info on that link sorry.

Could it be one of these? IMG_3738.JPG

I'm not 100% certain, but it looks similar.

I realise conifers are a pig in a poke but appreciate help. A close up but just a snap with my phone so ... does that help?

As they say its a tricky one.
          Looking at the whole plant.
I still go with my original thoughts, but yes probably a variety of Lawsons.
The leaves do appear to be in, albeit small, flat sections.

Tend not to think its Leylandii, as I think its too dense looking for a young plant,
          also its branched very low.

          But just guessing really.
